SEARCH BEGINS FOR AIS/QANTAS YOUNG SOCCEROOS HEAD COACH

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced that a worldwide search would be undertaken to appoint a new AIS/Qantas Young Socceroos (National Under 20 Mens Football) Head Coach following the recent resignation of the previous coach, Steve OConnor, who has recently taken up a role as Technical Director at Sydney FC.

The AIS/Qantas Young Socceroos Head Coach will manage the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and National Under 20s Mens Football Program, and will be responsible for performance in qualifying and participating U20 tournaments, including the FIFA U20 World Cup, as well as fast-tracking the development of individual athletes to Qantas Under 23s and Qantas Socceroos selection.

This will be a significant addition to our senior national coaching staff alongside Rob Baan (National Technical Director), Pim Verbeek (Qantas Socceroos Head Coach), Graham Arnold (Qantas Under 23s head Coach) and Tom Sermanni (Matildas/AIS Womens Coach), said FFA Head of National Teams and Football Development, John Boultbee.

The current group of players involved in the National Under 20 Mens Football program are expected to feature heavily in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games, 2015 AFC Asian Cup and 2018 FIFA World Cup.

With the advent of the new National Youth League competition this year, the role of National Under 20 Mens Football Head Coach will be extremely important for the preparation of players for not only the Hyundai A-League, but also the Qantas Socceroos of the future.

We are confident of attracting applications from the best coaches in Australia, as well as overseas, for this position, concluded Boultbee.

The appointee to the position will have to hit the ground running with a busy program planned for the second half of 2008.

The next major tournament for the Qantas Young Socceroos is the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U19 Championships to be played in Saudi Arabia in November , which also serve as the qualifying tournament for the next FIFA U20 World Cup to be held in Egypt in 2009.

As part of their warm-up preparations for the AFC U19 Championships, the Qantas Young Socceroos will participate at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U19 Championships in Thailand this October.
