Former Joeys and Young Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou has signed a three-year deal to coach Greek third division team Panahaiki.
The former first division club in Greece is owned by one of South Australias richest men Con Makris, the ex-owner of former National Soccer League club West Adelaide.
Panahaiki is based in Patras, the third largest city in Greece and the main centre in the southern Peloponesse region of the country. Its been described as a sleeping giant of Greek football.
Former Panahaiki coach Nick Theodorakopoulos, who also coached Kallithea in the Greek second division and guided Wollongong Wolves to a National Soccer League title in 1999/2000 says its a great opportunity for Postecoglou.
Its a magnificent learning curve for Ange, anyone who has the chance to coach in Greece will come away with a great experience, Theodorakopoulos said.
Its understanding the different mentality and football culture, if he does make it through the volatility of Greek football, the sky is the limit.
Greek football is certainly volatile. In Makris first year as owner of Panahaiki he sacked eight managers, Theodorakopoulos among them.
As a player, Postecoglou represented the Socceroos four times from 1986 to 1988 and won two NSL titles with South Melbourne.
He then coached the Melbourne club from 1996 to 2000 - winning consecutive NSL championships in 1997/98 and 1998/99.
In 2000 he was appointed Australian national youth team coach, a job he held for seven years.
Postecoglou leaves for Greece on Tuesday night to take up his post at Panahaiki.
