Burns signs with leading Greek club
Tuesday, 10 June 2008

Nathan Burns.
AUFC Adelaide United FC and Qantas Under 23s striker Nathan Burns is off to Greece after The Reds agreed to transfer the talented forward to AEK Athens, one of the leading clubs in Greeces premier competition, the Greek Super League.

Adelaide United CEO Sam Ciccarello said, The club has agreed on terms to release Nathan to AEK Athens. Nathan has been keen for sometime to look at overseas opportunities and whilst we made every effort to hold onto him with a very strong offer through the recently introduced under 23 marquee player scheme, we respect and support Nathans desire to compete in a European league and he most certainly goes with our very best wishes.

It has been wonderful for the club to have brought Nathan to Adelaide and to have been a key to his professional personal development over the past couple of years.

We know that Nathan is a great talent and feel that he has a big future in front of him.

Burns is currently in Athens for the announcement and if all of the paper work is completed, it could see him join his new club by July 1, 2008. AEK Athens finished second in the Greek Super League last season, two points behind champions Olympiacos.

The 20 year old made a total of 54 appearances and scored 11 goals for Adelaide United FC (35 appearances and 9 goals in the Hyundai A-League). He was the clubs equal leading scorer in the Hyundai A-League 2006/07 Season, scored the first ever hat trick for the club and is also a capped Qantas Socceroo, having made his debut in 2007 against Singapore after coming on as a second half substitute.

Burns is scheduled to arrive back in Adelaide on Thursday 12 June. There will be a media opportunity with Burns on his arrival from Athens, with flight times and details to be advised.

Burns departure to play in Europe follows former United team mate Bruce Djites move to a European club, Djite having signed with Turkish side Genclerbirligi.

Release? Why would they not sell him? He was under contract, right?

negotiating a release as in 'this is how much you'll pay us in return for us releasing him from his obligations to us'?

or did he have a nick off to europe for nix contract?

I rekon it will be the second one. Australian clubs don't have the balls to stand up for themselves and ask for a fee, well a decent fee anyway

Good choice for a club to go onto.
Have AEK qualified for the next champions league?

its all a matter of whether he will get game time, good move for him if he gets game time bad move if he doesnt, some of the greatest players have wasted their career waiting for game time

The attraction of money is too much for some people......game time is the most important thing, but at the same time a players career only lasts 15 years so you wanna make as much money as you can.

i think its a good move for him, its a bigger club than sk brann and if he can work his way to the starting side he will be on the radar for a move to the epl

Release clauses do not mean the club lets them go for free. It tends to be that the club agrees with a player, that if they get an offer of a set value, or more, they will let the player leave.

The 20-year-old leaves his A-League club Adelaide United on a transfer fee of $500,000 plus on-sale benefits, and will start his time with the Greek giants on July 1.

The Olyroos and Socceroos attacker - who had also been wooed by a host of European clubs, including those in England, Norway, Denmark and Turkey, as well as others in Greece - chose AEK because he was guaranteed first team football and because he was impressed by the clubs stability, youthful management and ambition.

It is believed Burns had turned down far better financial offers in order to accept the AEK deal.

Burns decision comes at the end of an agonising eight month process during which European clubs dangled tempting offers for his services

im not so sure they're that poorly off
they have agostino who if he stays fit will be a good player in this league
they also signed Cristiano from Willem II where he scored 44 eredivise goals and is only 26 + if sarkies pulls his finger out they have another young gun
