England bid!

From the Guardian in the UK:

"The chairman of England's bid for the 2018 World Cup has resigned, the Guardian understands, after reports that he accused Spain and Russia of plotting to bribe referees.

Lord Triesman's departure comes after a Sunday newspaper sting, during which he is alleged to have accused two rival bidders of corruption.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Triesman said Spain would withdraw its bid for the 2018 event if Russia helped bribe referees at this summer's World Cup.

The Football Association has already faxed apologies to both countries and to the world governing body, Fifa.

Speaking about Triesman's decision, the new sports minister Hugh Robertson told the BBC: "It is absolutely the right decision to take.

"Our top priority, as a new government, is to win this bid for the country, and I am delighted they have acted as quickly and decisively as they have done.

"All is not lost, we would rather we weren't dealing with the situation but it is better that it has happened now, so soon after handing over the bid book, rather than two or three months out.

"It is not good for the organisation and it would be ludicrous to pretend otherwise, but the fundamentals that underpin the bid are as strong as ever and will be remembered long after this unfortunate event is forgotten."

Triesman, a former Labour government minister, was quoted in the article as saying: "Spain are looking for help ... to bribe the referees".

The newspaper claims to have taken the quotes from a secretly recorded conversation of Triesman talking to a female former aide. It quotes him as saying: "There's some evidence that the Spanish football authorities are trying to identify the referees ... and pay them."

Triesman has not resigned from his post as chairman of the FA, though he is already coming under pressure to so. Robertson said: "There are some serious questions to answer in terms of his position in the FA given that football is the national game and occupies such a prominent position in national life."

The storm comes just two days after David Beckham helped the FA submit its bid to persuade Fifa to award England the 2018 tournament.

Europe is tipped to get the 2018 event, with England up against Russia and joint offers from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands.

Lazio vs. Inter in Rome a few weeks ago was so blatantly fixed as to be insulting.

There's a game or two in Spain tonight that will raise some eyebrows if particular results occur in conjunction with others (coach of one team will instruct his team to lose 'cause the team that benefits will qualify for the Champions League as a result - the team he's off to manage next season. Massive betting plunge ensues etc.)

Quality. What a tool.

Probably true but some proof is often useful

Probably might be pushing it. Potentially at best with no proof and nothing but a hope that everyone holds the common english view that the whole world is against them. Foot shooting should be the official english game
