Kinnear fined over referee rage

Kinnear is awaiting a separate improper conduct charge by the FA
Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has been fined 500 by the Football Association for his criticism of referee Martin Atkinson.

The fine relates to Kinnear's comment that Atkinson was a "Mickey Mouse" referee after the Magpies' 2-1 Premier League defeat by Fulham on 9 November.

However, Kinnear was cleared of using abusive and insulting words towards an official in the game with Stoke City.

Kinnear also faces an improper conduct charge alongside Hull boss Phil Brown.

The 62-year-old, appointed as Kevin Keegan's temporary successor in September, complained about Atkinson's decision not to award a free-kick for a foul on Claudio Cacapa in the run-up to what proved to be Danny Murphy's match-winning penalty.

An FA Statement said: "At a regulatory commission hearing today, Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear was fined 500 and warned as to his future conduct.

"Kinnear admitted a charge of improper conduct relating to media comments made about referee Martin Atkinson after Newcastle's match against Fulham on 9 November.

"Kinnear denied a further charge of using abusive and insulting words towards a match official relating to Newcastle's match against Stoke City on 6 December.

"Kinnear was sent to the stands during this match after contesting the award of a free-kick. The commission found this charge not proved."

The Irishman now must contend with an outstanding improper conduct charge after clashing with Brown on the touchline during Newcastle's FA Cup third-round replay defeat at St James' Park on 14 January.

Meanwhile, Magpies owner Mike Ashley is ready to take a more active role at St James's as the club attempts to improve on its 14th place in the Premier League.

The businessman may be in the directors' box at Eastlands for the Premier League clash with Manchester City on Wednesday, having not attended any fixture since the game at Arsenal on 30 August.

Ashley had stopped attending games in the wake of a supporters' backlash over Kevin Keegan's departure as manager.
