Vukovic named in Olyroos squad

April 26, 2008 REPRIEVED Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic has been selected in Graham Arnold's 17-man Olyroos squad for a pre-Beijing training camp in Townsville next week.

While he won't be eligible to play until after July 28, Vukovic will rejoin the Australian under-23 squad for the eight-day camp from Thursday after having his nine-month ban for striking a referee amended so he can take part in the Beijing Olympics.

Arnold has also named Perth Glory custodian Tando Velaphi, who impressed in the Olyroos' 1-1 draw with Mexico last month, so Vukovic is no certainty to line up for Australia, despite having played in all 14 Olympic qualifiers.

Shortly after the eight-day camp in North Queensland, the Olyroos will travel to Malaysia to compete at the intercontinental under-23 football championship against fellow Olympic participants Argentina and Nigeria, along with Croatia, Ghana, Iraq, Ireland and Malaysia.

Vukovic will be unavailable for the warm-up tournament as well as several other friendlies and will not be able to play until Australia's first Olympic match against Serbia in Shanghai on August 7, if selected.

The 23-year-old's extended on-field absence could provide an opportunity for Velaphi to impress coach Arnold, who said the Townsville camp would be the last chance for some squad members to shine.

For some players, it will be the last opportunity to make a claim for a place in the final squad that will be selected to compete at the Olympics, Arnold said.

The Townsville training venue was selected by Arnold because of the similarity in climate to Malaysia and also to simulate the conditions the team will experience in Beijing in August.

We are expecting the conditions in Malaysia and China to be around 30 degrees with 80 per cent humidity, said Arnold.

Currently the Townsville climate is very similar to those conditions and it will give the players an opportunity to acclimatise and prepare themselves for the next three months leading into the Olympic Games.

With the exception of the Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United players, most of the players are just returning from their post A-League season break and a camp like this is important for them to re-establish match fitness and focus.

Boogs and Danny will get in the starting squad but Matt Simon has tough competition

Like Jason Hoffman hahahahahahahahahaha
That can't be the full squad playing in this tournament given there's only twelve in it so my thinking is that there's Over 23s they haven't mentioned.

Friendly great for Harry

HARRY Kewell may be no nearer to securing a new deal with Liverpool but the winger will get the chance to kick a ball in anger for the Socceroos next month in the friendly against Ghana.

The friendly is a warm-up for the World Cup qualifiers shortly afterwards but carries high stakes for Kewell, whose groin strain stopped him playing in the qualifier with China in March.

National coach Pim Verbeek wants Kewell to prove he is match fit and strong enough for the rapid-fire four qualifiers in three weeks in June, including two games in the heat of the Middle East.

Verbeek has also told Jason Culina, David Carney and Mile Sterjovski they will be required for the SFS fixture on May 23, plus Newcastle pair Jade North and Adam Griffiths.

North's mature performance against China has pushed him up the pecking order in defence, while Griffiths has impressed Verbeek with his versatility and willingness to listen and learn.

For Kewell, the game - his first in Australia since the Uruguay qualifiers in November 2005 - also offers a shop window to convince would-be European suitors to make an offer if talks with Liverpool ultimately reach stalemate.

The winger hasn't featured for the Reds since January, and yesterday said: "For me in particular this is an important part of getting back to full match fitness.

"I'm looking forward to getting back home as always because I don't have a chance to do it more than a couple of times a year at best.

"Ghana has a history of producing top players that have gone on to play in some of the best leagues in Europe.

"They are a great team for us to play in preparation for the next round of the World Cup qualifiers."

A number of players, including Mark Bresciano, Vince Grella, Carl Valeri and Josh Kennedy, who finish league duties just days before, are likely to be given permission to skip the Ghana game and have a brief holiday,

For North and Griffiths, plus a clutch of other A-League players hoping to earn a World Cup berth, the issue will be keeping fit.

To that end Verbeek has added Griffiths, North, Mile Jedinak, Ante Covic and Dean Heffernan to the Olyroo camp that will assemble in Townsville later this week.

Good to see Heft get a call .......... left side full back with pace ............ not to many around IMO has a reasonable good shot at being on the bench for Socceroos.

Jedi --------- I think its only time before he is a Socceroo ----------he is a talent and just keeps getting better --------- under Pims guidence IMO we will see the best CM in the A-League (including the Choppers buys)

Agreed ----------- well almost -------- that part about Jesus picking the side maybe slightly over the top. He can only pick the backs.
