Central Coast Mariners’ $1m windfall from Maty Ryan

They sit at the bottom of the pecking order in the A-League, its smallest club surviving on the smell of an oily rag.

But cash-strapped Central Coast will be the envy of most of their rivals following Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan’s transfer from Belgium’s Club Brugge to Spain’s Valencia.

Thanks to the foresight and acumen of former Mariners coach Graham Arnold — now boss at Sydney FC — the club will reap a $1 million windfall from the deal after Ryan signed a lucrative six- year contract with Valencia this week.

The Australian understands Arnold, who gave Ryan his break in top grade with the Mariners in the 2010-11 season, insisted on an on-sale clause that guaranteed the Gosford-based club 10 per cent of any further sale after he signed with Club Brugge at the end of the 2012-13 A-League season.

Valencia have reportedly paid $10 million for Ryan, who was being courted by a number of European clubs following two outstanding seasons in Belgium.

The financial return could not come at a better time for Central Coast, who are always under the microscope because of low attendances and financial problems that date back to the start of the A-League in 2005.

But for their ability to develop young players, such as Ryan, Trent Sainsbury (Holland), Mustafa Amini (Germany), Bernie Ibini (China), Oliver Bozanic (Switzerland) and Tom Rogic (Scotland) and sell them to overseas clubs their plight would be worse.

Just how the Mariners plan to use the money from Ryan’s sale remains to be seen. The club declined to comment when contacted by The Australian yesterday, saying they are still going through the finer details of the Valencia transfer.

New coach Tony Walmsley will no doubt put pressure on owner Mike Charlesworth to release some of the funds to buy players for the start of the new A-League season in October.

Significantly, the Mariners could also benefit if Rogic and Sainsbury can hit their straps and make impacts overseas.

Rogic, who plays for Celtic, and Sainsbury, who is with PEC Zwolle, both have clauses in their contracts — thanks to Arnold — that will guarantee a 20 per cent on-sale if they transfer to new clubs.

Rogic is starting to find his feet in Scotland after several seasons plagued by serious injuries that have restricted him to a handful of appearances. Better things are expected this season from the classy midfielder and he has already featured in several pre-season games with the club.

Sainsbury, who has become a permanent fixture for Ange Postecoglou with the Socceroos, has played 18 games with Zwolle since joining from the Mariners in 2014.

Meanwhile, Western Sydney are close to signing Italian journeyman Federico Piovaccari. It is believed the striker, who will be 31 in September, has rejected an offer from Israeli club Maccabi Haifa to link with the Wanderers.

Piovaccari has had plenty of experience in the lower leagues in Italy, although his last two stints have been in the top grade with Romania’s Steaua Bucuresti, where he played on loan for 25 games (10 goals) during the 2013-14 season, and last season with La Liga club Eibar (28 games for six goals).

Here's hoping 'Tommy & Sanga' do indeed 'kick-on' with their careers, so CCM recieve some more 'kick-backs'.

I wondered if there were other contracts with sell-on clauses, thanks Ray Gatt for clearing that up. Here's hoping Rogic and Sainsbury kick on. You would think from now on all A League clubs would be including this clause in their contracts.
