Bench Players at Half-Time

I've often wondered why at half-time the bench players come onto the field for a bit of a juggle and a few shots.

As a coach I would prefer to have my entire squad in the dressing room listening to the directions for the second half.  I know that the coach can relay the tactics and directions to the bench players when the second half begins, however I think it would be beneficial to have the entire team together at half-time interacting and having the bench players participate in the discussion.

After all, a few random shots on goal and a bit of a juggle aren't going to improve their skills anymore, nor is it a specialised warm-up routine they use to get ready for the second half.

I am interested in other people's opinions on why bench players don't usually listen to the half-time talk.  I know the simple answer is to provide them with time to warm-up, however I think listening to the half-time talk followed by a sideline warm-up would be much more beneficial.

The boys enjoyed watching the Goals for Grassroots relays at half-time on saturday!

They should be with the other guys at half-time and listen to the instructions rather than a little briefing before they go on.

If they warmed up properly with some real passing and shooting, it would be beneficial. You need to get a touch of the ball before going on for a short time.

But the boys certainly didn't do that on Saturday! The juggling was entertaining though.

Subs would hear everything the coach has to say during initial play and are more than likely  given prior instructions  before half time arrives. The warm up time would be much more beneficial to them than hearing what the coach has been yelling out all through the first half.

When they use it as an actual warm up it is more benefitial. At the very least you get to have a look at the pitch, which looked pretty shocking last week, before the crowd came in Mr Breeze had a lengthy inspection of it.

Maybe they think they are part of the half time onfield entertainment.

Have we ever in all honesty had half time "entertainment"!!??
Lets just cover a few highlights...

people walk on with blue hyundai banner...
people walk off with hyundai banner....

small children try to run fast holding sticks (and this is clearly one of the best on offer)

But lets not forget, men in white aprons run across field stand around table and f**k around with tomato sauce.

Oh yes... and did I mention people walk on with blue banner....
people walk off with blue banner...!!!

Unbelievable. Lets get some cheer girls back and sell out Blue tongue every week!

Bloody hard to see the HT entertainment from the bar queue :)

Perhaps we could have the ritual flogging of a scum supporter as HT entertainment?

bugger cheerleaders...

i can't see the case really being made purely in business terms - you've got to pay professional dancers to dance about etc. that's not going to be cheap, and i seriously doubt you'd sell a single extra ticket.

if people want to look at girls in skimpy clothing there are plenty of other opportunities, the mariners don't need to subsidise it.

i don't think half-time entertainment is an issue really. at the moment with the community first credit union thing they're getting a captive audience excited at the prospect of winning $1,000 (see how many of those damn banners are up every half time!).

otherwise people are having a stretch, a beer, a pie etc. they'll watch some kids running around and talk to their mates and before you know it the teams are back out there.

if you wanted to do anything more, it'd have to be worth it to the club, they're paying after all.

...of course, we could create our own half-time entertainment by singing a song or two...

. bring back the kiddies for the half-time match

. must be a buzz for the littlies and some of them have talent - in fact some of the half-time games were better than the main event last year

. just hold off on the commentary please

Can't scrap the Hyundai mat though, it's part of their contract, so what ever you do can't use the centre circle. Melbourne's shot for $1 million was a nice idea, I remember the shootout they did once, that could be a good idea to bring back.

(oh and I'm often one of those people that have to put the blue banner on or off, I don't want to do it either!)

Who remembers the Winfield girls in skimpy (not that I noticed) outfits at sporting events, handing out ciggy samples?

I'm too young (I think) to remember the Winfield girls, but I reckon half-time should have hacky-sack written all over it.  I'd like to see scum V mariners in a hacky-sack face-off.  :headbounce:

The running race is a shedload easier for interested parties to cheer for than a game of eight aside, I guess.

...and don't you dare besmirch Lowie and his pink shirt or I will fair dinkum go off my 'nana
