On another note - having Dutchy & Ollie back in the squad is a real boon despite losing Rogic, Ryan and probably Sterj for another week. I think Sterj has been extremely good value and hasn't gotten the credit he deserves as yet...

You are easily pleased!

Wonders aloud if weather reports about the heat on Saturday are correct should the game moved back to a 6:45 kick off...

Jesus love your chart...

Cant see them moving kick off if there is a game after us. Drinks breaks will surely come out though

This should be a cracker. Hopefully it cools down a bit this afternoon.

Interesting preview of our game on the Wanderers website....
Central Coast Mariners vs Adelaide United - Saturday 5:30PM EDT - Bluetongue Stadium, Gosford. A true top of the table clash but one with several key players missing. Central Coast go into this match with confidence high after over-running the Roar late, and with a full week at home to recuperate for a second home match in a row. The big losses for the Mariners are young gun Tom Rogic, and wonder-kid keeper Mat Ryan, both of whom are on international duty with the Socceroos. The Mariners were solid but not spectacular last week, they will be coming out firing for this match. Justin Pasfield will get a rare start for the Mariners and could have some work to do as the defence appears to have a soft underbelly.Adelaide kept chugging up the mountain last week against Sydney FC and were eventually rewarded with a late winner. I can see Adelaide in one of two ways. The first is a team who are getting much luckier than their #1 ranking suggests and who will be brought back down to earth soon enough, or a team who aren't playing very well but still getting results, who will get better as the season wears on. To me this is a repeat of the Mariners vs Sydney FC match that ended 7-2. The only difference is Adelaide are slightly better than Sydney FC so the final score probably won't be 7-2. Adelaide have lost Eugene Galekovic for the season reason the Mariners lost Mat Ryan although their choice for a replacement is down to two youth keepers. Galekovic has won points all on his own this season for Adelaide and without him they may finally be brought back down to earth. If Adelaide manage to win they will go 5 points clear at the top, while the Mariners if they win will rise to outright 1st. A draw could see the trailing pack of Victory and Newcastle make up a lot of ground should both those teams win.Prediction: 4-1 Mariners.

Arnie: “I am still deciding who to play at number 10,” he said. “(Adriano) Pellegrino is our natural second number 10 but we’ve got Bernie (Ibini) who can play in behind there as well.”
“Zac (Anderson) did a fantastic job against Brisbane Roar. I was over the moon with him and (Trent) Sainsbury last week, and he’s given me a tough night’s sleep ahead.”
I read elsewhere that Dutchy doesn't do heat too well which probably adds to the Zac conundrum

. well that's one way to look at it ... conceding less than a-goal-a-game, second only to adelaide

. hopefully our defence is tighter than usual today

Persistence, pressure and patience.

The Mariners, again in steaming conditions, had to work very hard against stubborn opponents to take a deserved win. Pasfield replaced Ryan while it was little Mickey McGlinchey who was given the no.10 role. Bernie Ibini started wide right.
The Mariners started really well creating opportunities almost at will. McGlinchey was relishing his role: he had a great chance to score after an Adelaide mistake but couldn’t quite place the shot past Adelaide’s impressive debutant 17 yr old Paul Izzo. McGlinchey than produced a wonderful turn and pass to put Bozanic in but Ollie blazed the chance first time over the bar when a touch might have been a better options. Bozanic again, after neat work by McGlinchey, again was way ove r the bar with his shot but to be fair the TV replay suggested the ball bobbed up just as he hit it. Bojic was prominent and McBreen had chances from a shot and a header. It seemed only a matter of time for the Mariners to open the score.

It was Adelaide though, against the run of play, through Arnie-hater Bruce Djite who scored. A Mariner attack broke down, the ball was played to Djite who laid it off and went for the return, neither McGlinchey or Bozanic tracked the run and Djite, surprisingly given room hit a strong shot bottom corner with Anderson and Sainsbury too late to get to him. What was that someone had said in the weak about the Mariners’ soft underbelly? It was a shame too for the powerful Anderson who had been totally dominant to that point.

Adelaide love this scenario; a goal up they now began to look like a good side. The Mariners lost their way; Ibini was looking good but with no cutting edge, Bojic pressed forward but Rose despite the presence of his long time partner Bozanic wasn’t making inroads and the kid, Izzo, was having an easy ride. I was feeling increasingly frustrated and then out of the blue the game turned.

Daniel McBreen produced a turn and pass straight out of the Tommy Rogic book and found Josh Rose on the left. There is an old adage that if you don’t shoot you don’t score: Rose shot and collected the winnings. The super strike by Rose bamboozled the confident Izzo and ripped into the back of the net. It was just what the side needed coming just before half time.

In the second half it was almost all one way traffic as the Mariners’ famed determination and will to win had them pushing for the winner but despite many near things it just wasn’t happening. Hutchinson’s frustration showed with a yellow card for a spiteful late elbow to the head challenge that could easily have been a red. Bernie wasted a great chance volleying over the top. McBreen almost got to a Rose cross but Boogard nicked it away. Twice Sainsbury made surging breaks forward but couldn’t provide the killer pass. The Mariners were getting closer and closer; it seemed that it was just a matter of time.

Bernie, who had faded after a promising start was replaced by the lively Mitchell Duke and finally the winner came. Duke nut-megged Ian Fyffe and then, shades of Matt Simon, won a ball from Boogard he probably shouldn’t and from the disarray in Adelaide defence it was Nick Montgomery who calmly placed the winner firmly past Izzo. A Monty goal – a rare collector’s item! There was almost a third as Duke impressively fed McBreen for Bojic to put in the net but McBreen was narrowly offside.

Adelaide just didn’t have the legs to win this; the Mariners finished much the stronger. The first round of nine matches out of the way: the Mariners are top of the ladder with just one, unlucky, defeat. They have done all that can be asked of them so far.

MoM wasn’t easy to pick but I go for the impressive Zac Anderson who is mounting a real challenge for a permanent starting role.
2 points to Monty for that goal
And 1 point to McGlinchey who provided a lot of our invention.

And should have added Rose was unlucky not to get a asecond goal when Izzo somehow deflected the ball wide of his far post

The players:

Pasfield – playing behind the Mariners defence means you have little to do. He was competent and confident, could do nothing with their goal but blemished his display with an unexpected spill of the ball
Bojic – solid performance, Cassio not allowed to storm forward as he likes to do, unlucky not to score
Rose – great goal, took a while to get going but his over lapping is a consistent threat
Anderson – superb powerful display; this guy has positive attitude to burn. He is making an irresistible claim to play
Sainsbury – a mixed bag, made a couple of mistakes in defence, covered well when Anderson made a mistake and made two wonderful but ultimately fruitless runs forward. Another who does not lack confidence
Montgomery – another influential display capped off with a crucial goal
Hutchinson – the unnecessary crude late elbow to the head challenge was all that we don’t need – it shows a player who struggles with the level of football we are playing. Otherwise a sound display helping to provide that defensive screen
Ibini – frustrating. He looked good on the ball especially when tracking back but in the final third his touch and composure fades away. He can be so much better than this.
McGlinchey – started brilliantly, faded in the hot conditions but came on strong at the end. A quality all round performance
Bozanic – started brightly, looked the part but he is not a finisher and never will be. Will find it hard to work his way into the starting line-up – although Hutch will be suspended soon the way he is going
McBreen – does everything you can ask; the goals haven’t come but his alround play is excellent
Duke – at last we saw a little of what gets rnie and the coaching staff excited. Bright confident cheeky brave and a real a handful
Pellegrino – didn’t have long but almost scored.

Hey Roy , another great summary mate.
Just a couple of things:-
a) McBreen did a mile of work up front both on & off the ball
b) The game changed when Duke came on.His determination & skill was awesome to watch
c) Bojic had a great game too. Cassio stayed away from him & he dominated his side of the park
Someone must have read my post on the last game too, because his body shape had changed & not once did
his first touch go back towards our goal. I thought he looked great tonight.

It`s great to Mariner!!!
