It's a one-off exhibition vs one AFL match out of nine this weekend, out of 22 weekends and a cricket game which only the die-hards would still be watching as we get f**ked up the jacksie by the poms.

If this were what football rated - any time, any game - we'd have something to get excited about. But it's a special vs a regular game and a bus crash, so don't get too excited.

EEERRRRrrrrrrr simply stating the facts as they are with the only comment it out-rated other sport on FTA that night... actually killed the other sport and it was a one off I accept...

Football position today and in days gone-by I understand was often self-inflicted by ... miss-management, corruption, to list but a few... lying to and then back stabbing Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdock back in the late 70’s was beyond dumb [ a book should be written on how dumb this was]..

However also journalist from other codes and vested media interest have had an affect where football is today .... Football has been IMO on a continual upward trajectory for some time, not without pain, setbacks and some tragedies on the journey ... however of all sports in Australia and off a low base the potential for growth is better than any other code...

That football was on Channel 7 a founding member of the “axis of evil” [Ch7, 3AW, Herald Sun] from 6:30 to 10:00 and it was the top sport rating show simply would not have happen 20, 15, 10 even 5 years ago... Remember the Ch 7 email ... it is a major change and everyone will be talking about the ratings thus it can be sold again next year to both NSW government [Destination NSW commenced talks with the FFA 10 days ago, the first steps to securing another major football scalp for Sydney. http://www.news.com.au/sport/footba...s-of-man-u-visit/story-fndkzvnd-1226682462487]] who want it again and the FTA stations... This year FFA paid each club one million each from this match ... so it's very important it won the ratings for next year if for nothing else...

Rating like last night have football being viewed seriously, nay very seriously.... memos have been sent after the SBS Socceroos rating and this match will cause more ... The Sydney based management of media companies is asking the Melbourne based sports departments ...””” We did not bid for Football broadcast rights why !!!!!”””

So not over excited, that only happens if I see spot a spelling error on a post ... no just posting the ratings and that it was the top rating sports on FTA that night and it was a trail pre-season match ...

Anyone know what the Socceroos ratings were?

That needs to be added to get the full football audience.

Interesting to see Ch9 report on Liverpools arrival as our "English" soccer mania, neatly trying to distance these events fom the domestic game.

1.5 million watched the last qualifier.

And I still see a lot of media distancing from the local game even in discussing the Socceroos. Get some expert come in to talk about Guus Hiddink's chance of coming in on the morning shows, he name drops local coaches, regular presenters are mystified and try to avoid talking about the local game at all. How can someone try to be an expert on the Socceroos without knowing whats going on with the A-League. Whatever, mate.

I have actually noticed a huge upswing in media.

Daily Tele In Syd ran the back 3 pages during the week & have had football everyday since the grand final of Rugby League. There website has a good football section as well.

MMM has bandwagoned the Wanderers & they are all rugby league.

We've seen this before of course; in Sydney we've had Spirit and then Sydney FC building up massively and collapsing just as spectacularly.

It's great, it's exciting, but it needs to be locked in. The comp was a shambles in 1998/99 when Spirit were booming, and the rest of the league wasn't anywhere near Spirit's standards off-field.

In 2005/06, Sydney were bleeding red ink and the football across the league still wasn't much chop. The fundamentals weren't there, the house was still built on sand.

Now we've got a base to work on. Wanderers have deeper support than Sydney had in the early years and far deeper than Spirit. On-field success is crucial, but there's a lot of potential there. What helps is that the football across the board is stronger. The *dreadful* scum side that lost so abjectly on Friday night would have annihilated our 2008 league winning side. It would have been ugly. The standard has gone up fast - just faster for some than others.

The general raising of standards and the increased interest that has followed is helping Sydney grow too - Sydney's memberships are up to 10k this year, so across the city there are 25k A-League club members *before* you count the Mariners fans who are Sydney residents (like myself and many others).

We're looking good now, we're actually looking different now, and we're looking strong now.

SBS Average Ratings = 194,500 (4 games) + Rd 4 Regionals

Side note ... a poster on 442 broke down the ratings down per night ...

Friday Night 107,250
Saturdays 94,375
Sundays 68,429

If we add Monday night of 69K…. Also the late Saturday match gets a bigger number than the early kick off…

Says to me Friday night matches should be scheduled in Perth and Wellington on alternative weekends to use the time difference to our advantage … i.e. two Friday night matches and only one Sunday match…

Sunday crowds are also down compared to Friday night...

Fox ratings are down this year. A little bit of that will be that we're losing ADP's novelty, Sydney are absolute pish and there'll be a small bleed from Friday night Fox to SBS, but there might be a general easing from last year anyway.
