Some helpful advice...

Do you ski? Awesome powder with the cold winds coming off Siberia and hitting the Sea of Japan. Apparently the summit of Mt Niseko is lower in altitude than the base of Thredbo. Go in Jan of Feb. Get involved in the culture and you can't go wrong. 500mL cans of Asahi out of a vending machine.... that's fantastic. Grab two and jump into a onsen (hot bath) with the missus.

I've heard that Hiroshima can be very humbling.....their memorial to what happened in 1945 can be quite an eye opener.

The Tokyo city bright lights are also something to see.

Was there 2 weeks ago, if you go there this time next year i totally recommend nozawa onsen, it is a thermal village and is a stones  throw to the mountain if skiing is your thing, i stayed at a place called lodge nagano for 7 nights which included a 6 day lift pass for the slopes and it coast me 700 dollars, that was whent the yen was 98, so about 1000 dollars now for a week with lift passes,

I got my tickets for 550 dollars return with jet star and it was fine, u have to pay for drinks and snacks but u can take stuff on board with u.

In tokyo, i recommend odaiba, it has the worlds biggest ferris wheel and has all these cool car factories and u can see prototypes of all these new cars

Ropingi has a great night life but very expensive, a pint of asahi is 1000 yen about 17 dollars

Accomodation in tokyo i stayed in shinjuku-ku in a hostel called sekitei, which is a hostel but in a room u get a bed toilet, bathroom, fridge, tv and has free internet and wireless, it was really like a hotel and free porn on a channel, a bit weird

Travelling around japan i recommend a JR 4 day pass, u can catch any JR train in japan all day, 4 day pass about 290 dollars, very good if u are leaving tokyo but if staying in tokyo i would just buy tickets on the day

hope there is a lil bit of info for u mate
