100%, all this and lots more. They need a comprehensive strategy to turn things around. I am not optimistic though. I worry that the strategy is built more around the sugar fixes only. Allianz will solve all SFC's problems; WSW will start winning and all their fans from the early days will miraculously reappear. Hey presto the big 2 in each of the big 2 cities will be dominating and the crowds will be back and all APL needs to do is throw the big 4 the marquee fund money to make sure they do continue to dominate. It might work but I don't think there is a Plan B.
We’re at an awkward point before the season where they could be close to launching a marketing blitz, that would go a long way towards reassuring me if it happens. Im a bit surprised they didn’t get more sugar hits tbh. Thought we might have seen multiple marquee players.

I mean, they should. Because when is everyone watching. The APL should throw ads into these times. Not because we can't beat them but because they're watching. f**k them. Drop it in there.
I’ve seen their ads during our games, we should because what’s the use of waiting until they finish as there isn’t much time before the season starts. Aspro seems to be in a lot of marketing, interesting choice of player.

The A-League grand final is locked and loaded, with Melbourne City ready to take on the Central Coast Mariners at CommBank Stadium on Saturday night.

In what is shaping up to be a David V Goliath battle, Melbourne City been in form all season, whereas the Central Coast have cruised home on a late season hot streak.

Ahead of the whistle blow, Mediaweek spoke to Nick Bower, Paramount’s general manager – ad sales about why football is such a good fit for Paramount and its advertising partners.

“We’re really excited about the finals this year,” says Bower. “The audiences across 10 Bold, 10 Play, and Paramount+ are all up year on year for finals, so it’s been a really good series from that perspective.

“We’re really excited about the numbers that we’re seeing, viewing on Paramount+ is up year on year 11% for stream starts, and 34% for minutes viewed. That just shows there are a lot of Australians out there that are loving watching the A-League finals series so far.”

Football is a unique sport, but Bower points out that “it’s also a really exciting one.” For the Paramount team, advertising around the game means highlighting the audiences that the sport attracts.

It targets a younger audience than some of the other traditional football codes, which is really appealing to our partners. It also is a sport that really encapsulates things like diversity, inclusion, and it heroes female participation in sport. It’s a sport that not only lives up to our ideals and our values as a business, but in addition to that, it really resonates with our partners.

“It works so well to connect to a sport that has such deep roots in the community, and we’re seeing that through the audiences that we’re receiving so far in this finals series.”

Historically, the highest placing team at the end of the season would be the ones to host the A-League decider, but that changed earlier this year. In a controversial decision, the A-League sold the grand final hosting rights to Sydney, no matter the result.
Despite the drama, Bower says that Paramount’s job hasn’t been affected.
Those decisions are with the A-League, and it really hasn’t impacted us as the broadcaster. We’re just looking forward to what will be a pretty exciting grand final.”
Of course, the weekend of football doesn’t end with the A-League grand final.
“We’re really excited about Paramount+ delivering the FA Cup Final live and exclusive on Sunday night,” says Bower. “We’re going to have the A-League grand final go into a preview of the FA Cup, which will then push viewers to Paramount+ to watch the game live.
“It’s Manchester United vs Manchester City, a massive Manchester derby, which will be huge. It’s safe to say we just can’t get enough.”
Finally, when asked which team he will be getting behind on Saturday, Bower’s answer is simple:
I’m going for good ratings on Saturday night, like any good TV person!

Football Fans Flocked To The Broadcast Of The Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final Seeing The Central Coast Mariners Take Out The Championship For The First Time In A Decade.​

Saturday’s Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final was won by underdogs Central Coast Mariners who beat the favourite Melbourne City 6-1, in the highest scoring final in the championship’s history.

The total national audience was up 51% on the 2021-22 Grand Final and up 62% in 25 to 54s, 58% in under 50s and 39% in 16 to 39s. The match was also #2 in its timeslot on 10 in total people and key demographics.

Adam Cush, Director of Sport Production, Paramount Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) said it was a tremendous broadcast and the biggest A-League Grand Final audience since 2019.

“It was an excellent end to the season where we gave the A-Leagues a home across the Paramount playground giving new and diehard football fans the ability to watch key matches live and free on 10, 10 Bold, 10 Play and every game on Paramount+.

“This season saw strong growth in viewers for the finals and new audiences for the Liberty A-League with all women’s matches available on 10 Play, free for Australians to view,” said Adam.

The 2022-23 Liberty A-League and Isuzu UTE A-League season reached 6.08 million Australians. The season set new highs for digital viewing.​

  • Isuzu UTE A-League matches saw a 48% growth in minutes viewed on last season.
  • Liberty A-League matches saw a 63% growth in minutes viewed on last season.
  • Isuzu UTE A-League matches were #1 in their timeslot across the commercial multi-channels in 16 to 39s. The Finals series matches lifted 53% year-on-year.
Australian Professional Leagues CEO, Danny Townsend, said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Australasian football, and as we reflect on the season that was, there is so much to celebrate. We had 44% more fans attend men’s game and 56% more fans went to women’s games, and attendance records were broken three times in the finals’ series.

“Having every single women’s game available live and free on 10 Play and doubling the number of men’s free-to-air matches meant that hundreds of thousands of fans were served up the best of the beautiful game this season. We thank Paramount ANZ for their partnership and vision for the growth of the game,” Danny said.

Paramount ANZ Football Presenter, Tara Rushton, said: “We’ve seen more goals than ever before, more teams, more players and more young-guns announce themselves onto the international stage across the Liberty A-League and Isuzu UTE A-League this season, and we were treated to one of the most entertaining seasons in A-Leagues’ history.

“Topped off with a history making Grand Final that will go down as one of the greatest nights in Australian football, the ‘team-that-could’, the Central Coast Mariners broke a 10-year drought to demolish the best team across the past four seasons Melbourne City. It was a Grand Final for the ages.”

Football fans stayed with Paramount+ on Saturday night to watch the Final in the world’s oldest and most prestigious knockout tournament, the Emirates FA Cup, where Manchester City defeated Manchester United in an encounter for the ages as City triumphed over their cross-town rivals 2-1.

And the football action continues Thursday 15 June, when fans can watch the Subway Socceroos take on 2022 FIFA World Cup winners, Argentina, live and free on 10, 10 Bold and 10 Play as well as Paramount+.

Plus, the stars of the future will be on show as the Subway Joeys compete in the Under 17s Asian Cup, streamed exclusively on 10 Play later this month.
