I would have thought Charlie Miller may have got goal of the year. Quite surprised at Qld for fair play award although they do tend to get away with everything.

All quite logical and arguable choices ... except one! Can you guess which?

I was a little surprised with Smeltz taking the big 1 personally, sure he's had a GOOD season but was it exceptional?

Isn't it voted by the other players?

Yes - but I was still a little surprised personally

Smeltz quits A-League for Turkey

Micheal Cockerill
February 3, 2009 - 10:52AM

Johnny Warren Medal winner Shane Smeltz has kicked his last ball in the A-League after accepting a lucrative three-year deal in Turkey.

The deal with Hacettepe S.K., completed at virtually the same time as Smeltz was on stage last night receiving the domestic competition's highest honour, trumped the offer from previous suitors Genclerbirligi for the services of the A-League's top marksman.

The New Zealand international scored 12 goals for Wellington Phoenix this season.

The transfer, believed to be worth $400,000, will see the bulk of the fee go to A-League newcomers Gold Coast United, who signed Smeltz as one of the key recruits for their debut season.
