ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Usain Bolt!

Garcia was a stunt but at least he was a professional footballer. This is nonsense. Can we have a competitive squad and serious signings pls?

Warwick Capper???
I'm an individual Jacko??
AFL, like the game itself, has always been a bit of a laugh.
I did enjoy "The Club" ......that was a decent movie.

$900k for a trial?

How about using that to attract actual footballers?

Pikey won't lose a penny.....if Bolt is deamed good enough he will be a massive marquee signing and the muppets at FFA will cough up as the exposure for HAL is priceless.
Marquee signing won't affect Pikeys balancing of the books.

If he doesn't trial, no loss, it has generated talk, and some publicity. A win.

If he does trial. Trial paid for by sponsors. The press descends on Tuggerah, media appearances, great publicity. A win.
If he does not get through the trial, no loss.

If he does get through it and prove capable of playing, which I believe will be a massive (I mean a REALLY, REALLY BIG) long shot that he will, it will be HUGE. Sponsors, bums on seats, publicity.

A very long shot, but little or no risk for all gain, possibly massive.

I like the pot odds.

I call.

No, the FFA . You know, the people who refused to back our W League bid.
No that's wrong. The FFA isn't being asked to find the trial at all. It has been talked about them helping to fund any contract he may sign but id highly doubt that would happen. If he does sign a contract we wouldn't need to FFA to fund it in any way. There would be more than enough third party intrest.

I just can't see him being any where near skilful enough to get a full time contract now. If he'd have trained with a club for the last 12 months then maybe.

Remember what Lawrie said about Beckham? It doesn't matter if he gets a contract. Everyone is talking about the Mariners. The problem I see is that it may be a deterrent to any other player we may be trying to sign. You know. The ones that can play.

The mere possibility that he could be paid just to turn up for a “trial” is embarrassing in itself.

Players don’t get paid during trial periods, end of.

“He’ll be treated like every other trialist”

Imagine being Corey Gameiro for example, horrendous few years with injury and finally getting a full pre season in and hopefully lead to solid season.
Now there is a a real possibility that a gimmick that has played a few charity games could take his spot in the line up.
Purely to make a quick buck.

or Jedi who drove up from W Sydney just to train in the hope that he could get a contract. Proper footballer when we were a proper football club

When players had to fight to be apart of our club, someone mentioned earlier this whole Bolt thing is no worse than victory signing Athieu.... Kenny earnt his pro contract with hard worth and consistent goals in a solid NPL comp.
Clearly not all NPL trialists work out, we especially know that, but they’ve earnt their trial chances at the very least.

Bolt could potentially be taking a spot that one of our hard working academy boys has been grinding for and deserving of..

I know I’m being extremely negative about this whole circus and it could not at all come to fruition. And I do understand those who want our club to have exposure and quick cash. But f**k me, am I only the one that wants our proud club to be a proper football club again?

No wonder there are so many more aleague/ccm snobs on the coast, I’m starting to see why they’re the way they are.

No where have I seen any talk about him being paid for the trial? Not sure where that's coming from other than here

Everybody wants this club to be a proper, title contending club again.

But this deal is not an either/or proposition - people saying ‘let’s go get a proper marquee player’ don’t realise that there is no money to fund that. Any marquee we can get won’t have the name recognition Bolt does. Therefore won’t attract the 3rd party money. Hell, I’ve only been following the mariners for 5-6 years, I had to search who Garcia was when we signed him! It’s not like we can go and spend $900k on a game winning marquee, the money is only available for Bolt. It is there because his name transcends the normal football scene.

So - do we turn down the opportunity and recede to the mediocrity we were in on Monday? Or do we roll the dice, get an absolute boatload of sponsor/player agent interest, generate mainstream media attention we have only dreamed of in the past (I’d say today alone gererated more column inches than when we won the comp), and try to generate relevance in other ways.

If he trials - win. No spend, massive coverage.
If he fails to win a contact - win. No spend, massive coverage.
If he wins a contract - win. We sell out the stadium at every home game this year, and drive interest in the brand like never before.

I seriously can’t see why people see this only as a negative - it’s not as though we are taking money from the cap!

There will be some side effects - media attention could distract from the purely football side of things, but wouldy it be the same the day Zlatan turns up in the US? Massive names drive massive interest -
No one cared when we signed Ass-dribble.
