Mariners Squad - HAL 13 - 2017- 2018

We desperately need a striker. So we sell a striker and get another defender. Nothing against Posco (welcome back), but I despair. :(:(:(:(:(

Only reason I'm not despairing Celery is I'm sure they know. With Rose on the out, we needed additional cover at CB and CM as well, so it's still a problem solved even if not in the area we most need.

That said, our camp surely has to be a lot less settled now and the change will have to impact. But hopefully we can settle and the mood in the squad is still ok. Couple of wins would do absolute wonders.

Edit* I read this post before I read Shaun's tweet exchange. Love Shaun, and I love supporting young talent, but not a fan of this response. We've been horrendous upfront and the fans are hurting.

If by junior strikers he's talking Bingham and Trent? Then it's pretty rich considering we've just released our number one striker and to now suggest two players that Okon has shown zero interest or confidence in deploying upfront this season. Instead he's opted for a winger who has one of the worst goal scoring records in the HAL. Not exactly comforting.

I get Sean has to do his job, but we badly need talent in the front third.

Maybe he's talking Skapetis and Trent. We'll see.

It would appear the Melbourne City deal has fallen through for Rose the Younger as he's still listed as a Mariner. By my count, we have 22 players and should Wales be given a contract that would be the end of business for this season.

I hope there is some news this morning - if we go through the transfer window as it stands, it will be a fail. I'm slightly optimistic because we have been speaking to Giannou and O'Dougherty that we may still sign someone up front.

We have had a vastly improved defence this year, with a struggle to convert possession into scored goals. If our balance through this transfer window is to lose 2 starting front third players and a squaddy (Api, Astro, Ashcroft) and only gain 2 depth defenders and 1 depth striker(Melling, Posco, Skapetis) we are only making our weaknesses worse.

Let's hope there has been some movement overnight and news will come out soon.

Maybe Okons goal is to make the six with scoreless draws, pretty sure we have had two already and maybe more on the way. Could become another CCM record this year.

Better than what we have (or had)? Well his scoring rate looks much healthier than Kubi's at least.
He's a very driven player, moved to Melbourne Knights from Adelaide to get experience as a 16 year old. Did very well in the NPLV and earned a contract with Adelaide United. I've always rated him highly personally and in regards to recycling and keeping the ball he does much better than Pain or Appiah has. Probably at the same sort of ability level as Hoole just with a much better attitude.

As of midnight last night I was thinking we were done for the transfer window. i didn't realise until now there is still a slim opening:

Transfer Window mid-season
4 January – 2 February Australia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_window#Current_schedules_and_exceptions
No that’s old or different year. Ours shut yesterday.

However we can still sign free agents as long as they were a free agent before the transfer window opened.
E.g Tim Cahill was released prior to the window so he wasn’t stuck with the deadline
But Abbas who was released by Nix was released in the window so he had to be signed by yesterday and wasn’t so can’t sign for an A League club until the June window

Is there a chance that a deal like O'Doherty has been done, but the announcement hasnt been made until he arrives here for a photoshoot or something??

Why can't we sign someone like Patrick Antelmi from Wollongong Wolves.
He top scored in the FFA Cup a season or two ago and seems pretty consistent in the NPL from what little I can find about him.
He would come for minimum wage. Worth a trial at least.

SBS World Game article about Arnie being appointed Socceroos coach next week for post world cup

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/arti...-appointment-socceroos-post-world-cup-kingpin

It’s understood that former Socceroo and current Central Coast Mariners coach Paul Okon has already been earmarked as a potential replacement at Allianz Stadium, along with ex-Western Sydney Wanderers mentor Tony Popovic.Okon’s Mariners are languishing second last on the ladder, but Sydney believe that at a better resourced club his coaching kudos and credentials will bear far greater fruit.Okon, 45, has yet to be offered a contract extension by the Mariners, potentially simplifying a potential switch back to his hometown for possibly the A-League’s most coveted coaching position.

The fact this is playing out EXACTLY as I said it would is zero consolation.

Some might be happy - but it would be a big step back and we should have signed his extension months back imo.

Also explain last weeks horrific form slump tbh.

Just extend Tom H now so they get nowhere near him. Everyone else is no big loss
