Young Socceroos Squad Named

Oct 21 2008 13:06

QANTAS Young Socceroos Head Coach Jan Versleijen has selected a squad of 23 players for the AFC U19 Championships.
The AFC U19 Championships in Dammam, Saudi Arabia from 31 October- 14 November, will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U20 World Cup Egypt 2009 which will be held next July.

The Qantas Young Socceroos will go into the tournament with confidence following their recent win at the ASEAN Football Federation U19 Youth Championships in Thailand where they defeated the likes of China PR, Thailand and the Korea Republic.

"We have had a good preparation which includes our recent win in Thailand, said Versleijen.

Following all our training camps and lead-up matches, I believe we have assembled the strongest possible squad for this important tournament.

We have added some new players due to injury, in particular to cover for the injury to Jason Hoffman. I wish Jason a speedy return to fitness and should we qualify, I would expect that he would join us at the World Cup in Egypt in 2009.

It is important for Australian Football that we qualify for the World Cup to improve the development of this group of players."

Included in the squad are 17 Hyundai A-League players as well as James Brown from the Australian Institute of Sport.

The A-League players are Isaka Cernak (Queensland Roar), Luke De Vere (Queensland Roar), Nathan Elasi (Melbourne Victory), James Holland (Newcastle Jets), Marko Jesic (Newcastle Jets), Matthew Jurman (Sydney FC), Ben Kantarovski (Newcastle Jets), Milos Lujic (Melbourne Victory), Sam Munro (Sydney FC), Tahj Minniecon (Queensland Roar), Daniel Mullen (Adelaide United), Jason Naidovski (Newcastle Jets), Mitchell Nichols (Queensland Roar), Thomas Oar (Queensland Roar), Andrew Redmayne (gk) (Central Coast Mariners), Sebastian Ryall (Melbourne Victory), Nikolas Tsattalios (Sydney FC).

Versleijen has also included five players from overseas based clubs in Oliver Bozanic (Reading FC, England), Alex Cisak (gk) (Leicester City, England), Peter Cvetanovski (Borussia Mnchengladbach, Germany), Daniel Ireland (gk) (Coventry City, England) and Ryan McGowan (Hearts FC, Scotland).

The Qantas Young Socceroos have been drawn in Group D and will play their play their first match of the tournament against Thailand on Saturday 1 November, and then face Uzbekistan on Monday 3 November before their final group match against Jordan on Wednesday 5 November.

The Qantas Young Socceroos will depart Australia on Wednesday 22 October for a 7 day training camp in Abu Dhabi and will play a friendly match against the Korea Republic on Monday 27 October as part of their preparations, before arriving in Saudi Arabia on 29 October to prepare for their first match of Championships.

The top 4 nations from the AFC U19 Championships will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup which will be held in Egypt from 10-31 July 2009.

Jesic played in the match against welling ton, and as a NYL commentator, I've seen him play in the NYL (against Adelaide no less). I never even based it on his performance against Melbourne.

Jesic is an U-19 and his performances on both a-league an NYL warranted his callup. Fair play to the lad.

I have obviously only seen the Glory NYL side the once but they impressed me a hell of a lot more than some of the seniors (who are not HAL standard some of them).

Who is the coach? Obviously not Mitchell, too technical

Young Roos Beat Jordan

Nov 6 2008 12:13

QANTAS Young Socceroos have defeated Jordan 2-1 overnight to top Group D and advance to the quarter-finals of the AFC U19 Championships in Saudi Arabia.
Goals to Milos Lujic and Sebastian Ryall sealed the important victory, although a late goal from Jordan substitute Zaid Khalil set up an exciting finish to the match.

In perfect football conditions, Jordan had the better of the opening exchanges but could not create any serious goal scoring opportunities.

The Young Socceroos improved as the match progressed and broke the deadlock five minutes before half time when Tahj Minniecon played a ball into the middle of the park to Mitch Nichols who found Milos Lujic on the left edge of the penalty box.

Lujic then hit a stinging right foot shot past the Jordan goalkeeper Emad Feras which hit the inside of the left post and then went into the goal.

The Young Socceroos came close to doubling their lead shortly afterwards when Lujic tried to set up Nichols following a long ball from Ryan McGowan, but Nichols was unable to get a shot away to trouble the keeper.

Jordan continued to look for an equaliser after the break and came close to scoring just after the hour mark when Fathi Omar broke free and then played in midfielder Suleiman Loiy behind the defence.

But when presented with his one-on-one opportunity Loiy could not beat goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne who produced a confident save.

The Young Socceroos doubled their lead in the 70th minute when Mitch Nichols was brought down in the box by a rash challenge from the Jordan captain, Ibrahim Zawahreh.

Sebastian Ryall made no mistake from the penalty spot to give his team a two goal buffer going into the closing stages of the match.

Jordan pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute through substitute Zaid Khalil, and although Jordan attacked strongly for the last ten minutes, the defence, and in particular goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, held firm to take the win and the top position of Group D.

Head coach Jan Versleijen was pleased with the result and his teams performance during the group stage of the tournament .

"Our goal was to top the group and we have achieved this," he said. Jordan were a very difficult opponent who had some good passages of play but we also lost the ball a number of times too easily giving Jordan some chances.

We now have 90 minutes of football to qualify for the World Cup and we need to focus on this and our quarter final opponent DPR Korea as they will be a very tough opposition."

In the other group match, Uzbekistan defeated Thailand 3-2, whilst in Group C China PR topped the table with DPR Korea in second place.

The Qantas Young Socceroos will now play DPR Korea in the Quarter Finals on Saturday 8 November. Should they defeat DPR Korea, not only will they progress to the semi-finals of the AFC U19 Championships, but they will also qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup which will be held in Egypt from 10-31 July 2009.
