AUSTRALIAN sport faces a rocky road ahead after Qantas this week axed its internal sponsorship division, throwing into doubt the future of tens of millions of dollars of sponsorships with sporting organisations, clubs and its individual ambassadors.

The airline is one of the major backers of sport in the country, and in Melbourne it has multimillion-dollar deals with the AFL and the Australian formula one grand prix.

Under the ''Spirit of Sport'' banner, Qantas is a naming-rights sponsor of two national sporting teams, the Wallabies and the Socceroos.

Qantas is a major backer of the AFL, sponsoring the league's Kickstart Campaign for young indigenous players. It has other deals with Sydney FC and the Australian Olympic Committee. As a result of the internal review, staff have been told that an ''organisational change'' had taken place and management of the key sponsorship deals would be outsourced.

It is believed advertising agency M&C Saatchi will run the program.

''Every sponsorship deal will be affected by this decision,'' said a Qantas executive.

''It will affect sport, community and the arts. There will be people, moving between departments, there will be people moving on.''

It is believed Qantas will honour all of its existing contracts, but an internal review of every Qantas sponsorship deal will take place.

Qantas's sports ambassadors are John Eales, Kieren Perkins, Cathy Freeman, Greg Norman, Mark Schwarzer and Leisel Jones.
