Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

Nothing against Lord Anthony or Tom but neither are natural leaders. We still need to strengthen our squad a fair bit and i'm hoping the Captain is one of the new signings.
Matty "Groves" Simon is the natural capt for mine out of the existing squad.
Despite me suggesting Golec as my 'smokey' , I had given some serious thought to Simo becoming Captain.

Firstly because he's the embodiment of the 'Mariner's of Old' culture that MM wants to try and re-establish at the Club.

He's a born & bred Coastie, plays with his heart on his sleeve & has that natural fighting competitive streak that's fast dissapearing from Australian players across the board.

That's a great characteristic to possess, in trying to lead by example if your a Captain, but it can become a double edged sword
....... & it's doubly the case in point when you apply it to Matty Simon as a Captain.

That fighting spirit, that you hope will inspire the rest of the team easily can blur into one of 'ill-discipline' when you consider Simo's style of play & more importantly his track record of infringements.

His reputation proceeds him, so much so that I can barely remember a game where the likes Andy Harper, Slater or Zelic extolled vitriols to the effects of:

"LOOK OUT !! - Matty Simons has come on & he'll be putting the cat amongst those pigeons in defence" ... or words to that effect.

And rarely does Simo make a liar out of any of them !!

And it's for that reason alone, is what hesitates me in proffering him up as the best candidate to be our next Captain.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be stoked 'for him' if MM bestowed it upon him, he's on a 2year deal & most likely will finish up in his hometown club ........ and BOY! how great would that be for him & for CCM's history.

But I'm more inclined to Wombie's line of thinking in hoping a new highly experienced signing is still yet to come.
One who is more suited to the role of steadying the ship ....... that then leaves Simo to do what he does best:

"Lead from the Front straight into Battle"

I was unaware that Aspromitis had suffered an ACL and will be out for a significant chunk.

So that signing Wombat and I are hoping for as a possible new Captain suits the role of a CB, that we quite clearly NOW have a need to be recruiting for.

I'd even postulate to spending quite a few more coin$ than what we did on Cisse, ensuring that we really shore-up that base of the spine.

What we wouldnt give for another Zwanny Hey !!??

Hell ... why cant the club just entrust him to recon a trip back to Neder-Land and find his body double.

A CB who knows intuitly when to jump in to make that tackle, total awareness of the space both in front & behind him & more importantly where the opposition players were in it, those beautiful pinpoint passes coupled with some of those clever forwarding forays into the attacking third that caught lazy midfielders off their guard.
...... pure Footballing porn right there.

Give the Dutchman that task Mulvey !!
- dont think he'd let us down
.... Zwanny still has much LOVE for this Club & the culture we once had.

Hi everyone, l spent the majority of today writing this piece up to put on the YA Facebook. Thought l would do something different with the account and see if people wanted stuff written for the page regularly. If you want to give it a read, feel free and give me some feedback. Thanks.

Great work Josh. Just this sentence had me confused.

With Okon’s departure, the 20-year-old is now in limbo with the club not reporting for pre-season and l am sure fans are wondering what is happening.

With two commas:
With Okon’s departure, the 20-year-old is now in limbo with the club, not reporting for pre-season, and l am sure fans are wondering what is happening.

Or edited:
After Okon’s departure, the 20-year-old and his management sought to find a move to another club, but they have not been successful. To make matters worse DeSilva who is still under contract with the Mariners, is not reporting for pre-season training and is in clear limbo with the club. I'm sure many fans are wondering what is happening.

Call me old school but I prefer my captain on the field. Mat surely can’t but knowing the Mariners will be starting consistently.

It’s s bit like cricket. Bowlers are ordinary captains and strikers are the same.

No way we get another CB of quality. We will be stretched with both Aspro and Golec fighting serious injury to be ready for rnd 1 but both are starting quality when fit.

Some actual talent on the wing and Striker is more pressing.

Suspect we will have to play very deep and narrow and try to hit teams on the break. I think words like "gritty" and "dour" will be used a lot. We need an AL level target man who can hold up the hoofed clearances from a defence under siege to give us some breathing space.

I'm not sure Mulvey would let his team set up that way. I don't know about his time overseas, but everything I've seen of Mulvey in Australia makes me expect an evolution from Okon-ball, not a dramatic departure. Hopefully moving the ball quicker, getting players into the box, midfielders breaking beyond the striker, better final passes, greater willingness to shoot, wingers getting to the byline rather than holding it up and turning back inside, etc., but still a high line with a possession focus and some version of a 4-3-3.

Less backpassing?

Based on what I saw and heard today it won’t be a 4-3-3 formation. Mulvey spent a lot of time explaining his formation, how he wants the team to play and I was quite impressed with how he took the time to challenge the players when errors were made. We’re lacking some serious quality in my opinion up front and also on the right.

Good to hear. Any other info on Mulvey's formation and how they were lining up? Good to hear that Golec was involved too.

Yes, good to see Tom having a good run and also Golec. Aspo still on light duties.

Was the middle 3, 2 holders and 1 more attacking or 1 holder and 2 more attacking?
So basically no set #10?

Personally would prefer the one holder (melling/Cisse) with mikey and Tom in front.
