How the Mariners boss Hyundai A-League passing stats

Central Coast Mariners are quickly becoming one of the most enjoyable teams to watch in the Hyundai A-League.

Paul Okon’s proactive, possession-based approach is easy on the eye and his young squad is starting to deliver.

The Mariners have taken the lead in all four matches this season, with only a lack of experience stopping them from sitting safely inside the top six.

But their maturity is starting to show, as Opta data reveals.

An average of 515 passes per match at an impressive 80% accuracy is a big improvement on last term and sees them ranked as the competition’s undisputed pass masters.

Okon will be especially encouraged by the inroads his team is making in the final third, where their 708 completed passes are 66 more than next-nearest Sydney FC and a whopping 227 ahead of Western Sydney Wanderers.

And it’s hardly surprising when pint-sized playmaker Daniel de Silva is pulling the strings.

The 20-year-old’s 80% accuracy in attack is the best of any player to have made at least 50 passes in the most important area of the pitch.

It all adds up to positive signs for a Finals Series tilt.

Because it only takes one pass to get over the Mariners defence.
Newcastle last, yet beat us 5-1

However it is starting to come together but they still seem uncertain when they get into the opposition final 3rd

Ultra impressive that we have the highest amount of passes and pass completion in the final third. More ammo that says when it clicks, look out.

There was an English Striker with a name as Boring as his C.V. and play.

Someone someone?

Note if you say his name I'll just believe you and not picture him.

Note 2) I he might've been a CB.
John Sutton? Probably not worth remembering to be honest.

I have no recollection of some of the left backs we've had down the years. I remember Tomasevic from Hutch's testimonial rather than from actually playing for us. Have no recollection of Chris Tadrosse or Sam Gallagher beyond the name either, and only vague memories of Matthew Lewis and David D'apuzzo.

Yep, John Sutton!

Though now I think I was thinking of some forgettable "Dean" character!

Maybe I thought he was possible Dean Sutton...

Dean Heffernan. Big Unit with great touch but didn't have the fitness or Athletic for HAL. A dominate player in Vic State League.

Dan not Dean. Sorry for the slip.

The Big CB was Chris Doig.

But I have a feeling you have no idea where this bloke played on the park?? If you meant striker then it was Dan Heffernan
