Injury clouds Kewell's World Cup preparations
SEBASTIAN HASSETT
January 29, 2010 - 4:46PM

The full extent of Harry Kewell's groin injury will be known early next week after the Socceroo forward arrived home in Sydney this week to undertake scans after a fortnight out of the game.

Concern has fluctuated on Kewell's injury according to various reports from Turkey, with early suggestions that he could be out until May countered by more recent claims that he could be given the all-clear for a mid-February return.

Either way, the fact that Kewell has again suffered a groin injury will be a source of frustration for his Turkish club side, Galatasaray, and a point of concern for Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek, who has recently indicated he would consider using Kewell as a lone striker for the national team.

Kewell's problems with his adductor muscle stunted his ill-fated tenure with English giants Liverpool although he has largely been able to shake off his problems in Turkey since, scoring 27 goals in 62 games.

With the World Cup less than six months away, Kewell has decided not to take any chances with his groin and has flown back to Sydney for a five-day break, undertaking all his medical examinations in the process.

He is seeing a variety of specialists, as Harry usually does, and he will be guided by their medical opinion, Kewell's agent Bernie Mandic told SBS. We should know by Monday what the prognosis is.

There was even some speculation that the 31-year old could be offloaded by Galatasaray should his injury keep him out for the rest of the year given the club now has too many foreign players according to the Turkish league rules.

However, the club decided to part ways with Congolese striker Shabani Nonda instead and Kewell looks set to stay at the club that now boasts two prominent Socceroos after Lucas Neill's recent switch from Everton.

This is an important year. Apart from the forthcoming World Cup, Galatasaray are still heavily involved in the battle for the Turkish championship and are also seeking a spot in the next UEFA Champions League, Mandic said. So it is very important that Harry gets it right with regard to his injury.

Such is Kewell's popularity in Turkey that the Galatasaray fans have started a website - staywithusharry.com - to keep the Australian star at the club after his contract expires in June as interest for his signature from clubs across Europe begins to grow.
