ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

To enter in a proper analysis on David Beckham and his decline, you have to look at the trend in football tactics in Europe as a whole. Beckham could do well in the USA because of the relative lower level of quality there, but his natural role (wide midfielder) stopped existing in top level football Europe by-and-large. The rise of 4-5-1 put emphasis on pace for wide players. Even fullbacks had to be super fast and great crossing and basically all became wing backs. Beckham's role kind of disappeared, but he was savvy enough to manufacture a big money move to the USA before he became obsolete before his time, like Pep Guardiola did (his position, a pure-passing midfielder a la Xavi et al, disappeared in the 4-4-2 dominated period of the early/mid 00's - the very formation that Beckham did so well with at United).

He was good, very good, but he became obsolete as a world class footballer a long time ago.

Absolute excrement, of the highest degree. Beckham was vital in Madrid's charge to the title in his last year there. Dropped after announcing his moved to the MLS the senior playing group eventually begged an outcast Beckham to be brought back into the squad, he was and they went on to win the title with Beckham playing an instrumental role. Madrid even countered the offer at seasons end. Beckham was used in a deeper midfield role and both wide on each side. So a 6,8,7,or 11. And pace is obsolete when you can deliver like he could.

Was paraphrasing from here: http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03...d-tactics-5-back-to-four-bands-in-formations/

More stuff here: http://www.zonalmarking.net/category/decade/tacticsin2000s/

I didn't say he was obsolete before he left, I said he left before he became obsolete as a world class player. And I disagree somewhat re: pace. Sure, Xavi and Pirlo still do well despite their age and lack of pace, but they're exceptions to the rule. Maybe Beckham could've made do, but he certainly couldn't have made do on the wing.

BESIDES, Real Madrid only ever bought him for marketing purposes when they already had a wide player for that side and they should've gone for Ronaldinho.
:goodpost: that's what i've been trying to say all along:popcorn:

Doubt it.
