Adelaide United defender Robert Cornthwaite has been charged with basic assault on a bouncer at a city nightclub and for withholding information from South Australian police, the club said.
Adelaide chief executive Sam Ciccarello confirmed the charges against Cornthwaite after the alleged incident which took place just after midnight on Sunday.

It is the first time an Adelaide player has been charged for any social incident since the clubs inception in 2003.

Its alleged that Robert Cornthwaite was involved in an assault very early this morning, at around midnight, at an Adelaide night club, Ciccarello stated.

Robbie is being charged with basic assault and with withholding personal details from South Australian police.

Cornthwaite was kept at a police watch house before being released a short time after the alleged incident, the defender to appear in the Magistrates Court on November 4, 2009.

Adelaide have informed Football Federation Australia of the alleged incident, Ciccarello saying the club is in the process of gathering further information before deciding on whether to enforce any sanctions on Cornthwaite.

The club is already conducting a collection of information so we can determine if there has been any breach of the code of conduct. Weve advised the FFA of the alleged incident and the FFA, through its disciplinary committee, will commence its own review of the information at hand as of tomorrow and will determine its position in terms of any code of conduct issues with the game itself and the players behaviour, Ciccarello said.

Were obviously very disappointed with Robbie that the incident has allegedly occurred, theres a fair bit of process still to take its course here obviously Robbie is disappointed that hes put himself in a position that he found himself in and we will commence a review process of the information and through our code of conduct will determine what actions will be appropriate.

Cornthwaite will join the rest of the Reds squad as per normal for the clubs training session on Monday at 10am at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Adelaide take on Wellington Phoenix on Friday at Westpac Stadium in Wellington in Round 5 of the A-League

I would certainly hope that a criminal offence would constitute a breach of a code of conduct - though I daresay that was simply a non-committal, politically correct response from Adelaide.

1 player charged for a social incident from a club since 2003......can any of the clubs other codes testify to such a record?  Some clubs (*cough*BULLDOGS*cough*) would be proud if they go one week without anybody being charged....

Overall the HAL has a damn good record, though this shouldn't be an excuse for the FFA and the clubs to take such incidents lightly; the last thing we want is complacency to lead to an increase in such incidents, though I can't see football reaching the crisis facing NRL - or even hitting the rates of incidents of the AFL.

Be interesting to see what the response from FFA and Adelaide is to the incident - also be interesting to hear what actually happened.
