What continues to baffle me though is why intelligent people in positions of responsibility do continue to tell him stuff. I used to think that people genuinely underestimated his ability to retain and pass on information but surely enough time and experience has passed to prove otherwise.

I agree, i dont know the guy but some very direct and personal comments about a publicly identified person, regardless true or not, personally I don't think this forum is the right space for that. Besides being unpleasant, it's defamation territory, tread carefully.
