THE head of the Ten Network has promised to give the A-League “the respect it deserves”, after signing a two-year deal to become the competition’s free-to-air home.

From Round One of the new season Ten will simulcast the A-League’s Saturday night fixture as well as the finals and Socceroos friendlies, with Ten CEO Paul Anderson pledging to cross-promote the coverage across the network.

The deal was only finalised in recent days after Football Federation Australia held a tender process with the FTA channels and ABC. Under its terms, Fox Sports will pay FFA $2m a year to assume the FTA rights for the next two seasons and onsell to Ten, who Anderson said would initially give its weekly game “consistent and stable scheduling” on its One sibling channel.

The deal heralds the advent of the A-League onto commercial TV, coming after three years on SBS where viewing figures suffered from a perceived lack of promotion, with the move into a less niche environment seen as essential to building the competition’s brand.

Sydney FC players celebrate their A-League grand final win.
Ten will take Fox Sports’ entire production, including match commentary, with the pay-TV network viewing the move as promotion for its subscription packages. The selected games will also be streamed live on the Ten Play app, as well as Foxtel Go.

Though Anderson said he was open to the possibility of showing games on the main Ten network eventually, he said the priority was building viewer loyalty for the A-League.“We’ve been talking to the FFA for quite some time because we believe the A-League needs to be on free to air, and people need to be able to find it,” said Anderson.

“Football as a participation sport is obviously huge and the A-League is growing.“We want to treat it with the respect it deserves, to promote it and give it scheduling consistency. We want to give it a regular timeslot, and give it the chance to grow. We can promote it through our news bulletins, through programs like The Project — through a range of appropriate shows.“That benefits us, and gives us a chance to use A-League talent in building the competition’s profile.

If you look at any of our properties, when you have good talent it helps us across a range of shows.”Anderson said the key for the competition was in giving it a predictable home, allowing viewers to know where to find it.

The Ten Network has signed a two-year deal to broadcast A-League games.
“The Women’s Big Bash is a good example of a show that began on One but when its numbers grew it was moved to Ten. But consistency is the key, you can’t chop and change.”FFA CEO David Gallop said the move would give the A-League unprecedented reach.“This new arrangement is an opportunity to showcase the game for the first time on a channel with a history of promoting major sport,” said Gallop.

“It will take our major games, including derbies, into every Australian household for the first time, as well as the finals and certain Socceroos games within our control.“It’s part of our overall deal with Fox Sports and is part of working with them to drive subscription packages so as many people as possible can see the A-League. It’s an important part of the growth of our media value for the future.”Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany called it “a great result” for the game.

“The arrangement between Fox Sports and Network Ten will ensure more fans than ever before get to watch the best Australian footballers in action every week,” he said.“A prime-time Saturday night A-League match on free-to-air, featuring FOX SPORTS’ expert commentators and world class production, will help grow the game and build football for long-term success.”

This is good news. I mean, it's less than what we would have liked - all games would be great, with their own commentary team. Even just the main channel (with HD) would be nice.....but it's a start.
Just hope Ch10 are happy with the ratings and expand upon it - and hope this means Ch10 do some promotion of the game

Back in the day Ten's coverage of the AFL was very good and varied with shows like before the bounce. Would love to see them give Santo,Sam and Ed a gig.

Loved Santo, Sam and Ed.
Played golf with Adam Peacock just as the show got axed and apparently it used to cost $1m an episode but Peacock said that wasn't from the three being over paid some dodgy deal about studio costs and hence it wasn't feasible to continue. It was a good show and promotion of football and it would be good to have something similar come back.

Do you think the sat night being the free to air game will effect us getting sat night games?

We look a lot better with Paulo but a little success needed for Saturday night games

We've had some pretty big viewership numbers - we've more than earned our place in the 'blockbuster' timeslot, especially for the derbies.
If our scheduling is as unfair next season as it was this season then it's going to prove FFA bias well beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I thought that Thursday FC on SBS was pretty good.

Hyundai A-League and Caltex Socceroos matches will be broadcast live in prime time on free-to-air commercial television under a deal agreed by Football Federation Australia with Network Ten and FOX SPORTS.
Network Ten will broadcast the Harvey Norman Saturday Night football Hyundai A-League games and all finals as well as Caltex Socceroos matches after the completion of the current round of World Cup Qualifiers this year.

The new deal, which will come into effect for the 2017/18 Hyundai A-League season, will see FOX SPORTS’ world class broadcast of the Saturday 7.30pm blockbuster simulcast LIVE on Network Ten’s ONE.

The country’s best commentary team featuring Mark Bosnich, Robbie Slater, Simon Hill, Adam Peacock, Andy Harper and Tara Rushton will guide fans through the Saturday night match LIVE on FOX SPORTS and ONE.

The announcement follows last year’s ground breaking six year agreement which sees LIVE coverage of every Hyundai A-League game, along with Caltex Socceroos, Westfield Matildas, Westfield W-League and Westfield FFA Cup matches remain on FOX SPORTS.

“This is a win for football fans and an opportunity for us to showcase our game on a commercial network with a recent history of successfully covering major sport,” said Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop.

“We will take the biggest matches of the Hyundai A League - such as the Saturday night derbies - into every household in Australia live for the first time,” Mr Gallop said. “It is part of the overall broadcast deal with FOX SPORTS and means that we will be working with them to drive interest and subscriptions to their ‘all games live’ coverage of the Hyundai A-League.

“It is terrific to have a new and enthusiastic partner in Network Ten to promote the game.”

Network Ten Chief Executive Officer, Paul Anderson , said: “We are very proud to partner with Football Federation Australia and FOX SPORTS to bring the Hyundai A-League to our viewers on ONE and tenplay every Saturday night.

“From October this year, 27 home and away Harvey Norman Saturday Night football matches and five Finals – plus Caltex Socceroos matches from next year – will have a new home on free-to-air television. We will provide a consistent timeslot on ONE for 30 weeks of the year, promoting the Hyundai A-League and its best game each week to all of Australia.

“We are looking forward to working with FOX SPORTS and Football Federation Australia to broadcast the Hyundai A-League to our viewers live on ONE and live streamed on tenplay,” he said.

FOX SPORTS CEO, Patrick Delany said: “This is a great result for football fans in Australia. The arrangement between FOX SPORTS and Network Ten will ensure more fans than ever before get to watch the best Australian footballers in action every week.

A prime-time Saturday night A-League match, featuring the best line-up of football experts guiding fans through the action, will help grow the game and build football for long-term success,” Mr Delany said.
