CRICKET hooligans are out in force at the MCG today, as the first test kicks off between Australia and India. Dozens of arrests are expected throughout the day, as the mid-strength beer is consumed at an average rate. Hooligans have already been heard chanting "You are a wanker" to their first unsuspecting victim, and many more chants of sexual nature and implied violence are expected.

POLICE have said they are "disappointed" with the behaviour of troublemakers at yesterday's Boxing Day Test, after more than 110 people were evicted from the MCG and a dozen arrested.

While authorities praised the overall crowd behaviour, Victoria Police warned unruly cricket spectators that its zero-tolerance approach to misconduct would continue throughout the Test.

Among those sent from the ground were instigators of the Mexican wave, which circled the stadium several times throughout the day despite being banned for the first time at the Boxing Day event.

Those caught throwing items during the wave, such as plastic cups and food, were also ejected from the ground, along with a female fan who bared her breasts.

More flesh was on display late in the day's play when two spectators ran onto the pitch, the first draped in an Indian flag, the second more modest in a pair of shorts. Both were arrested and face fines of up to $6000 for invading the field.

Other arrests include nine for drunkenness and one for assaulting a police officer that man is likely to be charged on summons.

"There's an element of the crowd that have decided they are going to come here for one reason, and that is to have a little bit of cricket, and also to see if they can get thrown out," Superintendent Stephen Leane said.

"I think it's part of what they enjoy, so we are accommodating them and away they go."

Despite this misbehaviour particularly apparent around the former notorious Bay 13 area the majority of the crowd was well behaved, and Superintendent Leane said there were no reports of racial abuse.

It had been "a very good day" for relations between Indian and Australian supporters, he said.

The Melbourne Cricket Club's general manager of event operations, Trevor Dohnt, said the ban on the Mexican wave would remain in place until authorities were confident it could go around without objects being thrown.

Superintendent Leane said the wave ban was difficult to manage at such large events, but he believed the practice would "eventually peter out".

A crowd of just over 70,000 had been predicted for the Boxing Day clash, but the total attendance scraped in just below that, at 68,465, which Cricket Australia and the MCC described as a good result.

Despite some delays at gates in the morning due to security checks, entry and ticket lines moved relatively smoothly.
