Roar Away 10/2

My player ratings and thoughts:

Danny Vukovic: 7.5, Good game on the ball and while not overly tested by Brisbane did well with what he had to do. Guessed the right way for the penalty as well and was close to stopping it.

Storm Roux: 6.5, Worked hard forward and back but was never really put under much pressure. Dealt well with being initially targeted by the Roar's press. Moved the ball quickly to ensure that we moved Brisbane's set defence around enough. Probably should have finished his shot in the second half.

Nectar Triantis: 8, A force at the back and it won't be long till he's in the Socceroos/fetching us a tidy transfer fee. Amazing that he is still only 19.

Dan Hall: 7, Apart from one dodgy foul at the end the Dan Hall we all know and love is back. Would be a starter at basically every other A-League club and we have impressive depth in central defence. Had a tough role to play today when on the ball and handled it well.

James McGarry: 7, Good debut for the young Kiwi. Most impressively he defended well despite his side being clearly targeted by the Roar. Only concern was a couple of dodgy turnovers that resulted in a Roar turnover. But overall a good performance.

Josh Nisbet 7.5, Played a thankless role today but kept our ball speed up and broke lines where possible. Without his tireless work we would have never got the opportunities we did.

Max Balard: 7.5, Deserves special praise for his work rate stopping some very dangerous transition moments by Brisbane. As well as regular playing our most dangerous long balls all night. Worked incredibly hard positionally as well.

Beni Nkololo: 8, An electric performance from Beni tonight, which makes some of his more medicore showings this season all the more frustrating. Played a crucial role in all our best moments and bravely stepped up to take the penalty and converted it well. The backheel he managed to put Farrell through was absolutely magical.

Sam Silvera: 6, Not Sammy's best night since returning to the club but still offered the occasional spark. Hopefully he is being well managed by Monty and Sergio as he has come off looking very disgruntled two weeks in a row.

Marco Tùlio: 6.5, Good to see him finally score a tap in, but then missed another later that would have put the game to bed. Is an integral part of this side but needs to learn pick his moments for his more audacious ideas, as one that didn't work out almost resulted in a Brisbane goal.

Jason Cummings: 7, Could have easily had a hat trick on another night and needed some better service at times. Selfless of him to give the penalty to Beni, and it clearly rattled Holmes as he ran desperately to talk to his goalkeeping coach. Positioned himself well all night and was a crucial part of this win.

Substitutes:

Jacob Farrell: 5.5, Good to see Faz back in action but he did show a bit rust on the ball. Will only improve with more minutes in his legs.

Harry Steele: 6, Kept the ball speed up and broke up Brisbane attacks well.

Christian Theoharous: 6.5, Not his most impactful showing since joining but was still a dangerous player. Unlucky not to have an assist.

Olayinka Sunmola: 6.5, Acclimatised well to ALM conditions and even fed a dangerous ball into the box. Promising first appearance and will better for it.

Coaches:

Monty & Sergio 9:

We dominated Brisbane with and without the ball, and without the softest penalty in the world Vuka would have had a clean sheet. To achieve that with an extremely disrupted lead in is a testament to everyone at the club.

Our game plan has been successfully adapted to deal with our right back being pressed and Storm dealt with it well. We didn't fall into the trap that many ALM teams have this season and kept our ball speed up to move the Roar around. As well as enabling players to break lines and take players on. The half time team talk clearly worked and we kept being patient and working hard despite extremely frustrating circumstances.

McGarry had a good debut and if Monty has successfully taught him how to defend we have a good signing on our hands. Hall performed well and looked much more comfortable in his natural position. Sunmola was a brave selection that paid dividends and he provided an energetic spark we definitely needed.

Our subs were proactive instead of reactive which was good after the last few weeks. My only query is why Kuzevski didn't make the bench, he didn't play NPL last week, and having a versatile player like him surely would have been a decent option?

But overall credit to Monty and Sergio for a great win away from home that snaps a slump. This was a season defining game and we handled it with aplomb.

My Man of the Match Votes:
3: Beni Nkololo
2: Nectar Triantis
1: Max Balard

Decent away win but in truth we made hard work of finishing off a piss poor Bris team. O'Shea and Aldred are quality, the rest of them are clodhoppers.

Danny 7.5 Good game tonight, THIS is the Danny we were hoping for.
McGarry 6. Solid debut. Excellent throw in's. Good understudy.
Triantis 8. Looked classy tonight and mistake free.
Hall 7. Good game. Clean sheet.
Roux 6.5. Mixed bag but did some good stuff. Missed a fairly easy goal but worked very hard.
Beni 7.5. Good game. Nice penalty.
Ballard 6.5. Couple of wayward passes but looked classy at times tonight.
Niz. 7. Good as always.
Silvera 6.5. Did some good stuff and at least HE drives into the box.....the other Mids have to learn from this.
Cummings 6.5. Strange game but his Football IQ is high.
Tulio 6. Scored but missed another sitter.

Subs.

Faz looked excellent. Theo was dangerous. The new kid will have enjoyed that run. Harry looked good.

MOM.

3 Triantis
2. Beni
1. Danny.

I would ask the same question, especially as he is our RB alternative to Storm, who I thought was pretty pedestrian tonight. He did nothing really wrong and provided a couple of nice through balls, but he is now really only a journeyman. He does not seem to combine well with Benni, which I admit is a big ask, as I do not think anyone could understand what Benni is likely to do next.
However, if is Sash is our number 2 RB he really must get some game time in case Storm gets injured or suspended.

I thought he looked spent a couple of minutes earlier. Didn't really work last week leaving on a LB who was out of gas
I probably hadn't paid enough attention, too distracted by his very good touch and control. Based on one half, he seems like a great addition.

100% agree with all of this, Roar are NPL side (bar Aldred and O’Shea) that on their day will make you work hard. Exhibit A- tonight.

Tulio should’ve sealed the result needs to work on his finishing abit more. Dingo definitely still affected by his rib, was heavily padded too. Everyone did their job and grinded a good away win. Pleasing result. Both pens were horrendous decisions btw, hilariously.

Just further on mcgarry, he looked like a bloke who’s only trained 1-2 days with a new team, in a good way. Was composed, played safe mostly and did his job working for the team. I look forward to seeing him open up next time. We should see more improvement from Fazz now too, genuine competition.

Probably answered it in your last paragraph. Monty might want to give him a full game in NPL. Probably missed a few trial games there this year.

A very interesting game not our best game by a long shot but happy to take the 3 points.
A little frustrating when we get a lead we seem to stop playing. We go all negative instead of going for the kill.
I would be so frustrated if I was a Brisbane supporter they are at home and play so boring and still lose.
Just on the penalties from my point of view the ref made his decision on what he seen both to me looked like pens first up very soft after looking at the re play but the var was correct not over turning them as there was no clear and obvious error

Just on the penalty against us. The referee played on. The AR flagged it and the ref overturned. If the ref believed it was no penalty he should have at least consulted the AR. If he had done that I believe he may well have stood with his own decision. Then VAR could refer it to him if there was a clear and obvious error.

Both penalties were judgement calls and both could not have been overturned.

PORTALOOS !..I'm definitely not going there now (no wonder the NRL moved Dolphin games to Lang park this year) ANYWAY
no idea what is going through refs heads , have they been told to keep it square i.e red for red, dot shot for dot shot, to appease the dwindling masses?
every time Joker moved he had three snorers on him , smartest move their boss had in his head
Nekkie was on fire ,
Dan was getting better,
Nizz and Maxxy were bonz as was Beni ,
old mate McGarry was pretty good , Faz got some decent competition for his spot now..
Stormy and Sam done good but could of been more in sync
Wordy, i mean Thesaurus , i mean Thehaurus, has to be convinced there are fkn magnets in the goalposts
Tulio ...wtf , is he having a blue with the missus ?, the family show up and his dropping them in from half way , 4 weeks later he couldnt score smack in Cabramatta
ANYWAY, a win is a win is a win

Tweaked back last week and a cork this week.

addition to this, just talked to a cousin who used to live at Redcliffe and was a regular at recliffes dophins ground back in the 80s to watch QRL ...he says that they had dunnies on both sides of the ground ...so what the f**k has happened ?

There are (proper) toilets behind the food stores, the port a loos were just extras. Outside the tiny "big" screens, I thought it wasn't a bad stadium. Agree with a previous comment, the the bar deck at the southern bd is a perfect spot to set up and watch the game
