Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Some time in the distance past I am sure someone wanted to buy the club only and not the COE, and it was knocked back...

The COE is needed for the academy and training facilities... essentially an academy needs two to three playing fields, a gym, a pool, player private areas, player dressing room, coach / manager office, and support areas,.

The location as long as on the Coast is unimportant.

The COE has all these and the small sided fields, which I don't think we use. Further its near the station. However it could be anywhere if we have to leave the current location which I hope we don't...

My reading of the Tea Leaf's and Taro cards is RP is uncertain about the future of the league, meaning he would rather invest a smaller amount now than risk a muck larger investment... the price is I guess if the league takes off especially with the 130 million private equity investment by supposed experience sports and Football folk... then he will have to pay a larger amount for the remaining 50%.... however by this stage the risk factor will be well known.

The key for me in what he said [and I take FFC Mariners post as well in that talk is cheap and we have been let down before so let him put some meat to his words before we take what he says as it will happen]... but my take is, given his background as a player abet for only one season in the NSL he must have had reasonable skills and is a Football person... further given his age and involvement in Football he would be fully aware of the various issues in Football in Australia [IMO the reason he is so cautious with going to full ownership] ..... he will keep to his word and if Monty stays for a couple more years then we have a good few years ahead.

I've been very vocal about this A League Mens season under the APL and I can totally understand his hesitancy. I really hope Turbo's optimism makes me eat my words however the APL have not shown me enough to suggest they really know what they are doing. They seem to be full of big talkers who don't know how to organise or run a chook raffle. They are have not achieved a pass mark on anything this season in my opinion and the state of the game is at rock bottom.

Is that 'afloat' an intentional maritime pun?

I'm not so forgiving. Too many years of his management and too much anger and humiliation. I think he was on the board before buying and as a businessman probably saw an opportunity. He has had us on the market for so long that I think he is interested in cutting his losses. I wouldn't give him the steam off my piss.
But on the bright side we`re still here...

I've been wondering the same thing about the three year and bail option. I think the timing is important. Remember that his son got a gig here before his father invested, so presumably he has the ability. For the club, Monty and the fans I dont want Monty to compromise himself by advancing a player if he isnt ready or able. Likewise I dont blame a father from moving onto something else if his son's ambitions arent achieved.
I agree that the Academy is currently producing the goods and don't want to see that upset. How good is it that talented young players move here because they know that the Academy can polish them and provide opportunities to play A League if they are up to it? I'd rather this current situation, one where this successful model works than tinker with it/discredit it by playing favourites even for a cash injection.

. is this 3 year thing legit?

. I know it was posted on here before the official acknowledgement of his involvement but I don't recall anything official putting a time frame on it

That's my line of thinking as well. If there was an option to buy after 3 years I don't see MC stepping down as a director like the release said he did. As to why MC didnt sell his real estate as well, maybe he didnt want to, they couldnt agree on a value or Peil didnt want that additional cost at this stage. Lots of possibilities there.

. perhaps the talked about 3 year option is on the CoE?

. football/fitness bloke buying into a football team is one thing but buying into a property development is another thing entirely

The announcement did not mention the 3 years, but neither did it make any mention whatsoever that he had become either an outright or partial owner of the club. It said he has joined the board, will become chairman subject to FA/APL approval, and "will play a major role in the funding and strategic direction of the club". No mention of buying it.

It might just be poor wording that they omitted to mention that he has actually the new owner but if not then it does then fit with the previous intel that he is funding the football department for 3 years with a view to purchase.

My guess is that the 3 years is because he genuinely doesn't know what is life will look like in 3 years. He has moved here purely because of his son. He said he and his wife had fallen in love with the coast, but she seems to still live in Canberra - maybe the other son has school or other commitments down there. I assume the reason he is getting a pilot license is to shorten travelling times between his two homes.

He knows he is committed to the CCM and the coast for 3 years while his son progresses through the Academy. In 3 years the sons can/will be independent and he and his wife might decide to make the coast their permanent home (regardless of whether junior has cracked a senior contract) and he goes all in and buys the CoE. Or the careers of the boys takes them elsewhere and they continue to follow, or they just decide they want to be in Canberra, and with no ongoing connection to the coast he will want out of the Mariners and the deal is structured so everything reverts to Mikey with no fuss.

I like to think Rich is smart enough to know that his young lad needs to work extremely hard to be ready for a senior deal if or when the time comes. And is regardless of whether his father owns the club or not. Who knows at this point. I don’t think it’s a factor personally. More of a happy coincidence…. The academy scouting network found his son, rich was looking at investing in a club, saw the opportunity and took it.

Pre Hal, Gorman talked about creating Australia's best youth academy.... LM set it up in Hal 1....

After LM the academy was still there but with Gorman going and that prick from Queensland being put in charge it kinda took a back seat... still huge but not what Gorman dreamed of or what Lm tried to establish....

Along comes Monty, who was developed thu one of England's best academies... Monty and Staj [another believer in youth] took over thr reins and we could be competitive again if we could get the academy right.

Along come Peil... another one who believes in the academy...

Just maybe the Monty / Peil management team can for fill Gormans dream of the best youth academy in Asia...

There's been a couple more youth coaches along the line that have really helped out.
Don't forget Ben Cahn and even Tony Walmsley who helped bring through some players.
