You were probably the only bloke on the Coast willing to train with Gameiro.
Haha, he trained hard mate and was pretty upset with the injuries. I didn't train him but yeah, knowing his background it would have been risky :D

When he first did his injury with SFC I used to train at Macquarie Uni gym. I used to see him in there every time I went. He was always busting a gut to get fit.

Can't read the article because it's behind a pay wall but the headline says enough. I would assume it's related to this thread title

The Wollongong Wolves are on the hunt for a new coach after Luke Wilkshire announced he will stand down at the end of the NSW National Premier Leagues season.

After a hugely successful four years in charge, the 40-year-old will join the Central Coast Mariners as head of youth development.

It's a role that will see the Albion Park talent work closely alongside another former Wolves star, and current Mariners head coach, Nick Montgomery.

Wilkshire signed on to lead his junior club as a reluctant coach in 2019, achieving immediate success in his rookie season.

The former Socceroo led the Wolves to a historic NSW NPL premiership before they also claimed the National Premier Leagues final.

A return to the NPL semi-finals followed in 2020, while the 2021 season was abandoned due to COVID.

The Wilkshire-led Wollongong side has also made an impact at the national level, reaching the round of 16 of this year's FFA Cup, ultimately falling to Montgomery's Mariners.

Wilkshire acknowledged it was a tough decision to leave his home town, however he's looking forward to the opportunity to develop the next generation of A-League stars.

"Becoming a coach and a manager wasn't something I aspired to," Wilkshire said. "However, the Wolves gave me an opportunity and it's something I will always be grateful for. Tory Lavalle, and everyone of influence at the club have been fantastic.

"The club and its people will always be special to me. I hope to come back one day when the club is in the A-League. But at this moment, this opportunity with the Mariners is exciting and one I need at this stage of my career."

Wilkshire's departure leaves a significant hole for the Wolves to fill, with new CEO Strebre Delovski set to start the hunt for a replacement.

Delovski was disappointed to see his coach leave Wollongong, but congratulated Wilkshire on the opportunity to progress his career.

"Everyone at our club is grateful for the work and influence Luke and his family has had," Delovski said.

"We are certain he will go on to achieve more success. We all sincerely thank Luke and wish him and his family success and happiness.

"From the club's perspective, there is no doubt that there will be a lot of interest in the vacant role and we will go through a process to identify the best person to take us forward.

"The next couple of years of football in Australia will bring significant change. We will find the right person to guide us into the next era."

Wilkshire informed the side of his pending departure after Friday night's 3-1 victory over Blacktown City at WIN Stadium.

It's a result that proved his side will be a force to be reckoned with throughout the second half of the NSW NPL season after a tough start to the year.

The match turned in the 72nd minute when the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Daniel Collins received his second yellow card.

Wollongong made their opponents pay, Leroy Jennings handing his side a 2-1 lead before Lachlan Scott put the game to bed in the 82nd minute.

The win comes just days after a youthful Wolves side dismantled Western Rage 6-2 in their fourth-round Australia Cup fixture and Wilkshire is confident his team is finding form at the right point in the season.

"We knew it was an important game for us," Wilkshire said. "There's moments in games that can shift momentum and moments in seasons that can shift momentum. To win like that, in the way we did, can be that moment.

"We know this team is good enough to beat any team in this league. We've shown that, now it's about consistency.

"It was good to score three goals and stay unbeaten at home. It's very important we enjoy that win, take confidence from it and focus on next week."

What was the 3 year option thing? Are we going to see this guy bail if his kid gets to 19 and doesn't make it into the first team?

Seems like a real good news story, i guess some of us are tainted/skeptical from the Charlesworth era. We should give him a fair go though, at the moment he looks like just what we need.
Is the young Peil much of a footballer?

Ideal scenario is that Ken has identified the role as a gap to Peil, who has then said he will fund a decent salary for the role and recommended Wilkshire (who is Peil's mate). Ken and Monty have then interviewed Wilkshire and agreed he is the man for the job.

However given that Peil and Wilkshire are mates, is also possible that Peil has made the decision unilaterally or only given Ken/Monty token input - if that has happened then hopefully it is the case that Ken and Monty rate Wilkshire anyway and are pragmatic about the process.

Peil talked about developing more "aggressive and athletic players like we (and I assume by this he means Australia) did 10 years ago", which seems to echo comments that Wilkshire had made about the NT not being aggressive enough. The Academy is running red hot at the moment and I hope Wilkshire is going to build on and enhance that rather than making major changes to suit his own philosophy.
My concern with the aggressive athletic statement is that those are easy traits to train. Its football skill and IQ that are far harder. If we go back to fast runners, we're cooked.

The Golden Gen also were massively helped in their reputation by Guus.

I've been wondering the same thing about the three year and bail option. I think the timing is important. Remember that his son got a gig here before his father invested, so presumably he has the ability. For the club, Monty and the fans I dont want Monty to compromise himself by advancing a player if he isnt ready or able. Likewise I dont blame a father from moving onto something else if his son's ambitions arent achieved.
I agree that the Academy is currently producing the goods and don't want to see that upset. How good is it that talented young players move here because they know that the Academy can polish them and provide opportunities to play A League if they are up to it? I'd rather this current situation, one where this successful model works than tinker with it/discredit it by playing favourites even for a cash injection.

He is now 17 playing in the U20 Academy side so that probably says he is ok. I once worked with the wife of a General Manager who was incredibly talented. She was constantly looked over for promotion to avoid the look of nepotism. So it can hurt as well. I think we need to trust that the club will treat his son on his own merits.

Hopefully Richard Peil does take over the club in 3 years.
That`s not a dig at Charlesworth, who has kept our club afloat, albeit in a limited capacity.
No-one else wanted us and he put up his hand,so we do owe him a debt of gratitude.

If Peil is fair dinkum though I`d like to see him shore up our base at Tuggerah.
It`d been a production line that`s just bearing fruit for our academy players.
I`d like to see us take over the storage place next door.
It already has 4 Buildings which could easily be utilised by the club.
The back building could house the coaches rooms/gym and players facilities as it`s right on our boundary.
It also has a huge carpark and other land.
Also investigate the purchase of the other land out the back.
If, further down the track,we do build our our stadium it has a great location ie close to railway, freeway and good access to the coast.
At the least it would consolidate our future and show long term commitment to the club...

Is that 'afloat' an intentional maritime pun?

I'm not so forgiving. Too many years of his management and too much anger and humiliation. I think he was on the board before buying and as a businessman probably saw an opportunity. He has had us on the market for so long that I think he is interested in cutting his losses. I wouldn't give him the steam off my piss.

The point is without Charlesworth there would be no Central Coast Mariners for Peil to invest in. While you don't have to love him, without him there would be no Mariners. I am/was prepared to go through some lean and frankly embarrassing years if it means that I have a viable club on the Coast that we can all be proud of and get behind for the long term.

Sorry but f**k Charlesworth - he stumped up to keep his real estate deal afloat.

I know his wife a little from running, and seem to remember the sun had been in the UK at some academy during covid. Can’t recall which setup.

Charlesworth's development isnt part of any deal I dont think. He keeps the tax payer funded land all to himself

That's my take as well so whilst good ideas Style I don't think MC will allow Peil to get involved in his parcel of land. Perhaps we will see a renewed focus from MC on the COE now that is all he has, then lease it to the Club.
