MATT SIMON PENS ONE-YEAR EXTENSION WITH THE MARINERS

Mariners great Matt Simon has signed a one-year extension with the club that will see him play on for the A-League 2021/22 season.

The club’s all-time leading goal scorer, Simon had one of his best individual seasons on 2020/21, scoring 10 times and assisting another three goals as he formed a formidable partnership up front with Costa Rican Marco Urena.

2021/22 will be Simon’s 12th season with the Mariners, and with 288 A-League matches already under his belt will likely see him break the 300-game mark.

The veteran striker said he is looking forward to another campaign and growing the support and pride for the Mariners that has returned to the Coast.

“This season that we just had was very successful, and after speaking to the club and talking about going around for another year it was an easy decision in the end,” he said.

“It was nice to score the goals, but even nicer to finish third on the table and I’m very happy with how the team and the club went this year and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

“I’ve mentioned the Wollongong game, when we played Wellington down there it actually felt like a home game for us.”

“That was a time I actually thought it was getting back to the good old days with the support we’ve had, and I think the crowd really appreciated what we were able to do this year, and to have them come back to the ground and support us the way they did is a testament to them.”

Mariners Head of Football Ken Schembri welcomed Simon’s commitment to another campaign on the Central Coast.

“Matty’s name is synonymous with the Mariners, and we were very keen to have him return for another season,” Schembri said.

“He had a terrific season on the pitch this season, but he also brings so much value in the dressing room as a leader and as a mentor for the young members of our squad, and that aspect of his contribution will be so important in the Mariners continued forward progress.”

If we had to throw a team together today wouldn’t be awful. But if Tongyik and Urena sign on opens up some nice options.

Going to be that guy but I’m not so keen on Simon playing on. No question he’s a great figure in the club and enjoyed his best season in years.

Here’s the negative bit - the club will be tempted to start him which impacts the overall plan, recruitment, etc. He takes up a senior wage which could arguably be better used. He’s not getting any younger and looked cooked many times this season.

If he’s kicking on as the super sub we expected over the last few years and we have a decent striker in mind then all good. If we’re pinning our hopes on another double digit goal haul from him I am very concerned.

DAN HALL SIGNS TWO-YEAR DEAL WITH MARINERS

Promising young defender Dan Hall has signed a new, two-year deal with the Mariners that keeps him in Yellow & Navy until June 2023.

Hall moved to the Mariners from Queensland in May 2018 and was a key part of the NPL and Y-League setups before signing a one-year A-League contract ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The 22-year-old made his first A-League start against reigning Champions Sydney FC in April and gave a great account of himself, before deputising for Ruon Tongyik in the Mariners’ final two matches of the regular season and the Elimination Final against Macarthur.

Hall said this week it was a huge honour for him to sign a new senior deal, particularly at the Mariners where he plays alongside several of his youth teammates on the pitch.

“This is definitely something I’m stoked about,” he said.

“Coming into this year I just wanted to keep my head down and see where it would take me, and obviously I got a couple of opportunities near the back end of the season and I wanted to make the most of it and to secure two more years at the club is something I’m happy about for me and my family.”

“I wanted to repay the faith of the club when I got the chance. With Ruon getting the international call up they were big shoes to fill, so obviously I had to try my best. It’s definitely a great experience and I can’t wait to continue playing.”’

“I remember there was a time in the Western United game where I looked around and I couldn’t believe how many of the Academy products were on the pitch with me, and I thought that was pretty surreal to see all my mates now up playing A-League.”

Head of Football Ken Schembri said Hall had stepped up to the plate when required, and that he was excited to see another Academy product sign a senior deal.

“It has been a pleasure to watch Dan over the past couple of years as he has come through our Academy and now into the A-League setup,” Schembri said.

“We saw how he stepped up towards the end of the season with Ruon on international duty, and the job he did in high-pressure matches against experienced opposition.”

“It’s another example of our talented youth being given a chance. We will continue to build strong foundations through the Academy for the future of our club.”
