That wasn't a dead cert chance. It was ricochet stuff. They didn't create it by great play either. The goal wasn't open either there were 2 Mariners on the goal line. Take nothing away from Birraz though. You are right, he was immense again however they did not look dangerous in the final third.
Not that one Scott. Up the other end (Bay 16). No defender in the same post code, just needed a toe poke, he butchered it and Birraz grabbed it gratefully.

Another gutsy win based on hard work across the park and the three points were nothing less than the boys deserved for their efforts.

Providing the pitch holds up after the bloody egg-chasers trample all over it on Saturday, we can really lay down a marker by turning Perf over on Sunday. I was surprised to hear they were flying back after the Nux game but that works in our favour, so we’ll take it.

The class that Ollie showed escorting Kye’s Mum off the pitch just shows why he is the best captain we have had since Hutch and a true Mariner.

I'll keep the names under wraps BUT-

Matt's stepfather has been a professional colleague of mine for 18 months now at least. I scored a pass to tonights' game from the guy who lights our cannon, then saw Matt's stepfather across the road from the ground pre-match. He happened to have a spare ticket to the corporate box so I grabbed it off him. It was a full box, with plenty of familiar faces I know professionally. At H/T I popped out with Matt's stepfather for a smoke and he said (and I quote) "I hope they put Matt on tonight" (he has been saying this for at least 12 months now). I said "Yeah, and imagine if he scored the match-winner!"

To which he said "Mate, even if they lost tonight I'd just be happy to see him on, so you could look it up on Wikipedia and see his name there". To which I said "Yeah, but if he scored the match winner that'd be the cherry on top"

So to see Matty's stepfather getting excited when he got a text saying Matty would get subbed on was enough. What followed still feels surreal. People coming up to hug Matty's stepdad, glasses off, in tears. Yours truly, slapping him on the back, saying over and over "I told you! I told you didn't I?"

I grabbed a bottle of Little Fat Lamb on the walk home because tonight of all nights it felt deserved. One of those occasions you'll talk about for decades where magic happens. Thanks to whoever it was at Erina Macca's who gave me the ride home. I never thought a day that started with LFC losing to f**king FULHAM (with all due respect FFCMariner) would finish like this

This club is magic.

If you want a great laugh, go to the aleague website and check out Milicic's presser. He is asked about his dominating possession and the chances and attempts being very similar is he would consider going a bit more direct to try and score. His answer........ one word, no. Hahaha, no plan b hey?

Absolutely no way should he play further up the pitch.

I was right wasn't I - did anyone not watch the last 10 minutes.

Don't get me wrong that was a brilliant start and the fastest goal on professional debut in the A League and the fastest on debut with CCM (not as fast as Mitch Duke's goal on debut for WSW - but who cares - that didn't count for anything), and sealing the win and our spot at the top of the league - does not get any better.

But the last 10 minutes after that, he was poor, gave up possession far too easily and was out of position more often than not.

If Staj wants him to play further forward I hope he learns how to be as effective as he can be when coming from deep. If he can do that then the sky is the limit for him.

Staj doesn't agree with you and I'm glad he doesn't.
TBF though that cameo doesn't happen if Smylie is fit and Staj admitted in the presser that he is primarily a wide player and mostly at lb for us. But you said, as you've quoted "absolutely no way" and you were wrong. We needed him to be there tonight and in essence he sealed the game.

I absolutely lost it at that. Totally outcoached, totally outplayed, totally beaten - see ya!
Outdone again, by his Matildas predecessor on International Women’s Day seems fitting

Its still early days BUT we have had to date two excellent coaches in Lawrie McKinna & Graham Arnold, the rest have failed some more so than others...

Both McKinna & Arnold, understood the Coast its people, and understood how to work on a budget... both McKinna & Arnold developed a game with a bunch of highly talented young players with a few hard heads to guide them around....

Both McKinna & Armold, said we want to be the first place kids wanta go...

Both McKinna & Arnold build their games around a great keeper and solid defense...

Staj, is the first coach since Arnold to understand the club at its core and how to make it work...

As I said early days but Staj could surpass both McKinna & Arnold as his squad and the spend of the bigger clubs is more than when Arnold was coach... two things about Arnold [no disrespect intended] but McKinna handed him a bunch of juniors to die for, and he did spend a fair bit...

Lets hope we keep Staj for his entire contract and he signs another...

Nah mate, you were wrong. You said absolutely no way he should play higher.

Bad touches or not, and I agree with you on that, he was in perfect position for the goal and scored with his wrong foot.

That, I believe, is the polar opposite of absolutely no way.

Viva le Hatch!

This side still makes it very hard to watch the last 20 minutes of any game. They let the other team have the ball and then defend a one or two goal lead effectively. Whether it is comfortably or scrambling they do it. I guess I am going to have to develop more faith but I have been conditioned over the years to expect bad things.
The defence was immense, but I attack did not flow. It could have been that the cows closed down a lot of our avenues. Too often a player in possession was caught with no options or poor options it led to too much loss of possession. However I suspect it could have been the pitch that looked very slow and put the timing of passes of that little bit to stuff things up. It looked heavy and maybe slowed us down to their speed. Bouman looked affected most of all. Early in the second half I was hoping Staj would swap him for Janota and play him centrally and put Nizz on the wing. too improve our go forward. In hindsight I suspect I was wrong as Nizz was great in defence late in the game. Looking forward to Stens being fit.
I cannot make up my mind who was the MOM. You could give it to anyone in the defence.

If we carry on like this we are going to be torn apart with international rep selections.
What a great thing to worry about.

Last night I had this weird dream that the Mariners went from perennial wooden spooners to leading the A-league by seven points, and knocking off the second-best team with a goal by the Wizard of Woy Woy, and another from an ex-ball boy who scored in 25 seconds with his first touch, making him the fastest debut goal scorer in Australian domestic football history.

Oh, wait.... :vhappy:

Both McKinna and Arnold at various times put their hands in their own pockets to help out unpaid players...

Post of the night for me. Onya Midfielder.

Without wanting to repeat everything everyone else has said - great result - but I was quite concerned at the amount of ball we turned over in the middle of the park - quite a lot of it unforced. That was safe enough against a possession based team but a more direct team, like Brisbane or City could have really hurt us.

He wasn't the only one to cough it up going forward, but on being out of position he was one of the few getting back every time often chasing down his own lost ball and making others look like they were out for a warm up jog. That impressed me as much if not more than his goal and makes him a viable option for a late sub up front IMO. There's stuff for Staj to work on but the speed and hunger are great assets.
