First goal Clisby was ball watching but where was his cover. Why he gives up the middle of the box still surprises me but the key to Clisby is getting him cover. That’s why he was good when team’s purely attack his side because the cover is already there.
The CB’s weren’t watching for the runs and the mids didn’t cover them. A horrible Mariners 15-20’s goal.
The second goal, Stens what are you doing but then everyone else compounded the mistake. Rowles made a decision to come out to the attacker leaving a massive hole for him to slip the pass into. He didn’t need to come as Janota was coming over if he could have held position until later as he wasn’t shooting from out there and if he does well good shot if he scores. It’s a real problem with Rowles he comes out way to often to cut off attacks but comes way to high when he does. Sit in the line and keep it difficult to get past instead of opening the holes

Olli missing and the back 4 makes dumb mistakes. Shows how much olli is bringing to the team

Jonata wide and Niz/Ballard in the middle with Ollie. Stens can't pass and those 2 would be my preferred centre pairing
Jonota and DDS wide with Kuol up top and Urena just behind will scare the shit out of defences.
City were a shambles with Kuol running T them

As I stated earlier I was watching our imports closely. I saw enough of Janota's skills last night to be convinced he will soon be one of the first picked in the team. His control of many difficult passes he received was a joy to watch. He has the ball skills and control that are sadly lacking in many Australian footballers.
If anyone of our mids is at risk from last nights game it must be Stens. He has been having what looks like a breakthrough season and has the ability to be a beat DM (thin Ian Ferguson, Jedi, etc) but he committed to many errors (like last year) last night that put us under pressure. Hopefully it was a one off and he can work them out of his game.
For me at the moment our preferred mids look to be Olly, Janota, Nizz and DDS with Stens, Casella and Ballard knocking at the door. Bouman is going to have to fight for a #10 role on the evidence so far.
The youth coming through are really blowing me away. I cannot wait to see Dan Hall on the park.
I really must make the effort this year to check out our NPL games to watch our future stars.

What a great time to be a Mariners fan.

Stens didn’t play safe and lost the ball for the 2 city goals.

However he did do the 2 key moments that paved the way for our 2 goals.

If he doesn’t give up possession to the other team in those two difficult moments the city goals would not have existed and could have been a clean sheet.
That’s why Nizzy and Olli are so important for communication next to Stens.

For me we stick with Stens, Olli, Nizzy, DDS when fit and have Jonota in front of Olli & Niz for the link between mid and front.

Jonota, Urena, Simon & Kuol will rotate & sub.

Smylie and Boumann we will start to see less of depending on quick turn arounds.

I missed the game - I will watch it, but great to see the result. It's also nice to see how many neutrals on reddit are excited about our performance this season.

Jankovic came on during extra time , Staj tried to at about 87 mins but kept getting delayed. I liked what I saw, he seemed smart and sharp. I'd expect to see more next game now
Yeah Staj wanted the delay he kept telling the 4th official “exactly 90, 90” then came on after that and yeah he seemed sharp ?

KOULity win. Sorry you guys don’t deserve that after not only a win but from behind. WTF.

We are legit a good team finally. I was worried it was just a hot start (Last season we won a couple early and then never again) while everyone worked us out as we were a very simple team. Solid bank of 4 x 2 and some poaching. Now i have seen the expansion of that defense and we have now dominated 3 quality teams in a row with them struggling to get over half way for decent patches and we copped Mariners goals (dumb concentration lapses).

@Wombat 44Fkn2 has been awesome. Finally numbers up top. No longer 1 vs 4.

The hunger to win the ball back but also doing it physically and without fouling or with just enough to put the ref in two minds has been magnificent. It’s so far from the last couple of years it’s hard to believe and it’s beautiful.

Then the team chemistry is starting to grow but most importantly heads aren’t dropping and players giving up like they used to. I was worried after WSW because we didn’t respond after conceeding and looked lost. We did a bit of that last night but we shook our selves out of it and got 3 goals all off effort. There was skill but effort won the ball all 3 times.

Great win but everyone should be enjoying we are worth watching again.
That would make a great banner Big Al!!!...

He did a few of these last night, but also a few howlers.

I'm a fan of Stensness, and think we're a lesser side without him. Second goal was all him, and he gave it away 3 odd times in the first half, but he's so strong in that role that I wouldn't be upsetting the apple cart. Him and Ollie are great in the middle.
I was sitting behind Ollie last night. He was telling the mids what to do (not that they heard him). With Ollie next to him he is a much better player and makes the right decisions and really is a beast. Without the moderating voice next to him he does make a lot of mistakes.

Urena wasn’t fit enough but his quality spoke volumes in the simple touch and slip in behind to matty to then sweaty across to casella. But he’ll be so much better for that run. Janota was very good and will improve with every game and will be HUGE for us.
Stens was so up and down in ollys spot
But on a whole I can’t really fault anyone. Clisby, sounds strange to say, was absolutely faultless and immense. Balard was impressive too I was shocked when he came on. Another youth boy excelling. I think we have too many!!!
DDS is in career best attitude and form.
And to think we have Olly and nizzy to come back in on Sunday.
what a f**king time to be alive we are THE REAL DEAL again and fully deserve 1st spot.
Kuol is already at cult status and apparently his brother is arriving to play academy next week.
Urena doesn't quite fit the scheme atm. Alou is gonna be a star so I wanna see him start every game. Matty and Alou had another moment of getting in each others way too but Matty handled it miles better than last match.

That’s because Urena and Matty are doing a lot of the same stuff. End result should be Matty starting less but they weren’t going to do that on a milestone game.

I think Matty and Alou do a lot of the same thing but it works mostly. Urena isn't fit enough yet so that will be part of the issue but it also seems he doesnt have the top end speed either.

You're right that there is some overlap with Matty and Kuol as well, the pressing defenders, defending from the front etc.. What I was referring to is in attack both Urena and Simon are bringing others including Kuol in to play rather than making those final runs themselves and that similarity isnt necessarily the best dynamic for scoring goals although it did result in Casella scoring. I think either of them is better with Kuol beside them to feed and provide that burst of speed that often eludes older legs.

It may be that Janota comes in to the picture as a second striker if Kuol is coming off the bench, Bouman an outside chance but I'm not really sure where our best use for him is and havent seen enough from him to warrant getting past Kuol.

We're on the same page.

Can someone explain the socceroos cap Olly gave Simmo pre game... Is my memory escaping me? When did matty play for the Socceroos? Or was it just a ollys cap?
I know he played a couple U23 games back in the day.
