Round 1 Away @ WSW

Thats what you pay for - scrappy game, nothing in it, he gets 1 chance and BANG. Exactly what we were missing yesterday
Was it actually a case of us not paying what he wanted or are we guessing that we were ever in the running? I mean there were reports involving us, but..........

Supposedly he wanted to live in Melbourne, if so there isn’t much you can do about that.

Perth only put 1 past Brisbane and copped an injury time equaliser so having a top quality attacker or 3 doesn’t guarantee a result either.

Only just caught up on the game.

Disappointing to lose but we were VERY good and deserved to win. Quite pleasing to see and encouraging going into the season. Kudos to Staj. Oar my MoM. Maybe shared with Duric.

Still just that one quality striker away aren't we?

That and a little more attacking depth in our mids would be nice too. Couple of injuries and I think our attack would be all but decimated. A bit more left field, Hatch coming on at LB late in games would actually give us something extra I suspect.

But we can always field a very strong more defensive 3 in a 433 if that happens. Wth Duric, Kim (hopefully) and GG. And in backup Stensness, Melling and NIzzy.

Yeah the more I think about the game and seeing berisha’s poached goal and even Wellington’s pommy striker...
We’re 1000% just lacking a goal scorer.
Transfer window closes 31 OCT i think.

Not to mention the Snake Roy.

Only Meier looked like a waste of a spot (but with fitness will very likely change and I'd have him in a heart beat). Every other HAL side has a quality starting striker (or two).

Caught the party bus and had a great time. Driver played good music and Iain Iain the Membership Man is a great guy.

Disappointed that there were a few whingers on the bus, slightly older, and complaining about the toilet stop, stop at Parra RSL and the excellent loud music. They should have booked on the coach but obviously went for the cheaper option.

Ok so here’s my two Penneth for what it’s worth.

Birra was solid and not much he could do about either goal, the first of which should have seen Oar on the front post.

Defence was ok and will hopefully improve with more time together as a unit. The full backs were both a little underwhelming for me personally, in that Clisby’s touch and crossing were very ordinary and Ziggy seemed to get caught between whether to play defensively or more attacking and ended up doing neither overly effectively. Fox and Rowles were both solid and but for his two ‘errors’ Fox could have been my MOTM I think he and Rowles won just about every aerial duel from memory, which was a nice change.

GG and GS were both ok as the defensive mids but GG is clearly underdone and GS isn’t yet mature enough to truly boss that position. The front 3 worked very hard throughout the first half but unfortunately for very little end product. DDS was the pick of them for me, ran himself into the ground and we weren’t the same after he was subbed. Oar worked hard and was effective in patches but as a senior player, he needed to have more impact against a largely understrength WSW side imo. Duric was also effective in patches but I don’t think he touched the ball for the opening 10-15 minutes, certainly not in a meaningful way to my recollection but he grew into the game and scored a good goal.

So what did I make of Muzz? I love the lad but this was his big chance to lay down some sort of a marker and he failed as far as I am concerned. He needs to want it more and be prepared to get hurt in the attempt of scoring, as that is the sometimes the difference between cutting it or not. His decision to chest Oar’s cross instead of heading it just killed me, especially as he had looked pretty solid aerially in the past.

Of the subs, only Silvera merits any comment imo, as the other two had no impact on the game from where I sat. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, SS isn’t the sort of player to salvage a losing position yet and he found it difficult to provide a spark after WSW had effectively parked the bus and I don’t blame him for that.

In summary, I thought we played okay but our opposition made us look better than we actually were and there will definitely be sterner tests than we got in Rd1. That we lack a ‘proper’ No.9 is all too obvious and if Staj can’t find the right ‘fit’ for the team so be it but if there’s no money in the pot, then yet again the club has dudded us.

The OSC has just provided the club with a detailed analysis of the salary cap, which shows how it is simply not possible to field a genuinely competitive squad by spending the cap floor (no surprise there I’m sure) but it goes much further into explaining why the current approach is fundamentally flawed and what can be done about it, so it will be interesting to see how the club responds.

Sounds like interesting reading if you are able to share it. If it is possible to get by with what we've spent so far every dollar must be spent well and you need some luck with avoiding injuries. I think we have spent reasonably well this off season with the main question mark being Kim's availability and injury history but if he strings some games together and kills it that'll be forgotten about very quickly. Still on the fence about Majok but I doubt he's on much money so not a huge deal in the bigger picture. But we have significant funds and a visa space tied up between weemac and Simon, neither of which have so far proven the doubters wrong. I don't think we can afford to wait them out, and that assumes we arent going to do something silly like offering either of them another deal.

The OSC may be looking to share the analysis but perhaps we need to let the club digest it and respond first, just some has some clear air to start with. The club has also been provided with an analysis of the OSC Player of the Year voting, showing why Members voted for the players that they did, so as to try to inform recruitment and retention strategies. Hopefully both documents will provide club management with some food for thought, as there surely needs to be some sort of circuit breaker, or the fallacy of the current approach will just be perpetuated ad infinitum.

While I agree we are short of a clinical striker I think people in general are thinking it is an easy step up to the HAL from NPL. Fitter defenders mean that as a striker they will always be less time when moving to a professional environment. Give Muzz time and he will be a good HAL level striker.

It is also needs to be remembered that a lot of his time has been spent out wide.

Muzz may need to be playing off a HAL level striker to allow him the freedom (and lack of pressure) to grow.
A striker transitioning from NPL shouldn't be the point man - there's the risk of too much pressure stopping him from ever growing.

I'm a bit late on watching the game after being at a wedding on Saturday and by 5pm, l was not completely sober, so couldn't properly judge on the bits and pieces l saw live.

On replay, l was content with a lot of the performance. The combinations were working well, midfield was good, De Silva is a different player under Staj, man, he was running everywhere. Duric is outstanding. A vital player for us this season. Oar looks great injury free. I hope he stays that way. Back on Duric, a DM that can pop up with a goal or two is very much needed for us. As much as l loved Tommy H, he wasn't a goalscorer. There's a few harsh criticisms on here with some things that happened which l can understand but it was just round 1. This loss is mostly forgotten if we beat the scum this week. A few things defensively to fix up and Murray to be more clinical. Agreed that Muzz needs someone to work with up front and we all know that's gonna be Simmo. So we just gotta work with what we have.

Shoutout to all the travelling fans, l would have been there if not for a wedding so l had some FOMO as l still haven't been to the new Parra stadium. Onto next week #FTS

I am not convinced we can afford to run with 2 strikers especially when neither is a top shelf (for the AL) option. If we're going to play to our strengths assuming full fitness we're looking at the 4-1-4-1 with Kim behind Oar, Duric, DDS, Silvera or a 4-2-3-1 with Kim and Duric (Stensness / GG if one of them is unavailable) behind Oar DDS and Silvera. 4-3-3 uses the same faces just shuffled around a bit.

For me its a case of one or the other so we can bring strength in to the middle of the park and keep making those attacking runs. It also allows us to have a better looking bench. No question a new visa striker would be the best option but until that happens we need to back one and stick with them, we've seen how that went with Matty last year and in preseason and no indication this year will be any different. Maybe Murray doesnt cut it, maybe its too much pressure but we have to take the chance.

I like a good stat to back my view so I looked up Mattys record from last season:
Goal 1 - Rd 6
Goal 2 - Rd 9
Assist Rd 10 & 11
Goal 3 - Round 13 [penalty]
Goal 4 - Round 12 (split round thats why its out of order)
Goal 5 - Round 25 [penalty]
Goal 6 & 7 - Round 26 [penalty, free kick]

Not trying to beat the guy up but those are the facts, so before we dump Murray and run back to the senior player lets give him a fair shot to get going. Take penalties off the table as surely someone else can take them and you've got the same number of goals from open play and assists last season.

If Staj has a plan to make use of Matty's defensive qualities in some clashes against the top of the table teams I can get behind that with a timely sub in for Murray after the hour mark. But if its a case of dropping Murray to the bench for 10-20 minutes per game we're in for a world of hurt.

Matty joined us in 06/07 and didn't break the 10 goal as season barrier until 10/11. We also seem to be off the mark quickly to throw Murray aside when he looks a more complete striker than Matty did at the same time of development

Matty didn't score for a whole season I seem to recall
