Announcement at noon but news is reporting West Melbourne approved for next season and south West Sydney the season after.
West Melbourne.... Just ... Why? ? Unlike West Sydney they don't really have a strong regional identity that I've ever heard. Geelong isn't west Melbourne. This is terrible. Nobody wants West Melbourne and it won't increase interest across the fan base

I believed that the Geelong support is hyped up as well. Even after their years of growth they only have about 4000 participants (about half what the Central Coast had when admitted).

N.B. These figures are the product of a hazy memory and may bear no relation to the facts

I can't comment on the merits of West Melbourne other than that's Melbourne Croatia territory. Brace yourself for some furious bleating and moaning from South Melbourne!

I strongly think Canberra should have got a spot.

Western Melbourne and Macarthur South-west Sydney have won the A-League expansion race, with an 11-team competition set to be formed next season.

The winning Victorian bid will join the A-League in 2019-20, before the South-west Sydney bid enters in 2020-21.

Western Melbourne will play out of Kardinia Park for the first two season before moving into a boutique rectangular 15-000-seat stadium in Tarneit, which they’ve vowed to build with their own funds.

The 20,000-capacity Campbelltown Stadium – which is 50 kilometres from Parramatta Stadium via road – will house the South-west Sydney team, with a lease agreement already in place.

Tense 11th hour negotiations went late into last night after the FFA board meeting, with both bids understood to have been asked to up their final bids.

Both clubs signed their A-League participation agreements in the early hours of the morning, with the four losing bids – South-east Victoria (Team 11), South Melbourne, Southern Expansion and Canberra United believed to have been informed this morning.

FFA was due to announce the two winning bids at a press conference at noon today (Thursday, AEDT) fronted by FFA chief executive David Gallop and A-League chief Greg O’Rourke.

The South-west Sydney bid was always favoured ahead of Southern Expansion, but the Melbourne license was hotly debated.

South-east Victorian bid (Team 11) was pitched as a strong option before the board went with Western Melbourne, who are understood to have paid a significantly higher license fee.

The Team 11 bid was proposing to play out of a newly built 15,000-seat stadium in Dandenong’s CBD, required around $120 million in government funding, with Casey Fields used as the temporary home.

It’s understood South-west Sydney’s preference was to start next season (2019-20), however Western Sydney Wanderers were keen to have a season of clear air at the refurbished Parramatta Stadium.

The staggered expansion approach was decided during a five-hour-long board meeting, having kicked off at 3pm Wednesday at FFA HQ in Sydney.

If South-west Sydney get up, they are expected to commence talks with ex Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak, now with Championship club Aston Villa, about joining them in their inaugural season.

Property mogul and BRW Rich Lister Lang Walker is the main backer of the Macarthur bid, after two local consortiums merged last August, with local businessman and fellow investor Gino Marra fronting the bid.

Canberra United’s bid has been well received, although there was a belief that they fell short in several areas including financials.

However Canberra could still be considered for the 2020-21 season, with Wellington Phoenix’s future up in the air.

Phoenix have one more year to run on their contract and must meet a series of performance metrics – including crowds – which they are now falling well short of.

South-west Sydney tried to join the A-League this season (2018-19), making an offer to merge with Wellington Phoenix at the end of last A-League season. FFA blocked the deal.

It’s all about the outdated marketing value of games being a derby. Soon all games will be derbys ........... and we will be back where we started.

I don’t see any advantage of this being better than the ethnic derbys.

The only saving grace about WMG coming in next year is that Lou Sticca is aligned with them. He seems to be the guy that brings out the 'real marquees' to Australia. If they bring in a couple of true marquees will it put pressure on City and Victory to do the same in Melbourne? Hopefully a bit younger than ADP this time Mr Sticca!!

It felt so sleazy any time Gallop talked about bidding and dodged license fee specifics. They've gone for the cash cow and shafted interesting bids like the wolves, canberra or tas. And the way they indicated interest in not discounting an Adelaide or Brisbane expansion I wouldn't be terribly hopeful for them in future. Quite disappointing from the new board.

Best part about today's announcement was the middle finger to SMFC

I dunno the absence of the big money shire-illawarra-gong Frankenstein southern expansion was a relief. The way they tried to set up shop both in Sydney's backyard and simultaneously squeezing out the wolves future hopes of a place really rubbed me the wrong way and I don't think I'm alone on that one.

That's a positive. But Western Melbourne is just Melbourne Croatia in disguise. Same region. Spokesperson is Steve Horvat (ex-Croatia player), Colours are red and white. I bet they will be in a checkered strip. Clever move by them, but just a return to the NSL days.

I wonder, in my tinfoil hat, if Sydney Croatia has a hand in the Sydney bid.

Did anyone think it would be anywhere other than Melba and sydeny? Like honestly? The FFA needed safe teams this time round.
Guarantee that canberra, gong and north bris are the next 3 Inc to replace Nux. They may go to 16 and you'll get team 11s area and maybe Freo or north Sydney/northern beaches. Then PnL with a 10 team 2nd div.
What the FFA should do is say so, give a time frame and say we want tenders for these locations rather than this convoluted bid process.

The local Sudenese community will be licking their lips at all the fresh meat and potential mugging victims the A League will bring into their lovely area.

Tassie would be a sick road game. Never happen but. They can't even get an AFL team
Apparently the Tas bid needed a new stadium which the goverment would do if we won the rights to the women's world cup. Since we haven't (at least yet) the bid was missing a pretty vital component and got cut early. It might have simply been a case of bad timing for them but hopefully that door isnt closed forever and if the chance is there it can come together.

I think the best case for this expansion was Canberra and Syd or Melb not both.

What do you think their names should be??

SWS Moths (I'm thinking Bogan)?

SWS commuters?

Western Melbourne Apex?

Apex jackals?

Any suggestions?

Given Werribee is 15 mins away they could also be the bogans. Also the trailer park boys might suit depending on the lawyers
